Summary: My beef is not with the deliberate changes Apple made to the OS, but with the colossal number of show-stopping bugs that have been allowed into this release.

Awesome.

I'm still on 10.5. It just works.

I'm reading the article now.

QuoteWithin seconds of the OS becoming available I had begun downloading Mac OS X 10.7 'Lion' to my trusty Mac mini.

Well, duh. There's his first mistake.

I hope someone can help me. Just received 3 new 27" Imac's with Lion installed in them - on their SSD drives. Have read about how to downgrade to Snow Leopard - start from SL DVD - run disk utility - format - install ---- However the Imac will not start from the Snow Leopard DVD - it sounds an alarm and spins. The only solution I can come up with I have is to start in target disk mode and try to run the installer from my old Imac. Any thoughts if that will work?

Is the Snow Leopard DVD a commercially purchased product or one that came with another Mac?

I ask because some OS install disks are specific to a particular Mac.  For example, if you buy an iMac, you can't use the OS install disk on a Mac tower, it just won't boot off of it.
If you can get a hold of a "combo" or a purchased OS disk installer, those will work on just about any Mac.

David -

The Snow Leopard DVD is from retail family pack.

Hmmmm...I wonder if Apple is blocking it for some reason? Try inserting the DVD, reboot, hold down the "Option" key after the bong and then select the DVD to boot from...or...open the "Startup Disk" in sys prefs and set it to boot from the DVD there and see if it will boot from the DVD in either case. Probably won't work if Apple has prevented booting it from a previous OS disk though.

Yup - tried both of those ideas - alarm went off both times. That is why I am thinking of the target disk mode. I think next/last logical step.

I just read this on the Apple Forums:

QuoteThe currently-shipping mid-2011 iMacs can boot Snow Leopard, even those that shipped from the factory with Lion preinstalled. The retail "universal" Snow Leopard DVD may not be able to boot them, however, as it has a version of Snow Leopard that does not include the necessary components for these iMacs. That makes getting Snow Leopard onto them and patched up to 10.6.8 a little tricky, but not impossible - just have to use another Mac to do the install with the new iMac in target disk mode, or restore from a bootable backup.

You cannot install an older OS on a new machine, how about adding and external and install the os to the external. It may let you start up from the external using Startup. I have an older OS installed onto a partition with repair utilities. Used it twice this year.
