I was using DHCP with no success Joe, then tried using manual entries for IP address, subnet mask and router. Nothing worked though Network prefs showed me connected.

Macintosh / Networking issue
December 02, 2022, 11:50:27 AM
I haven't put a Mac on a network for several years now, and I don't remember it being difficult to map to a server, but I'm having an issue with one of the iMacs at the place I'm working at now. It's running 10.14.6 Mojave. No internet connectivity all of a sudden. Wireless showed a connection and ethernet showed a connection to the network. However, no internet. Tried copying a link to the NAS from one of the other iMacs but no luck - like I was Ethernet connected (green light on the Network system preference) but not on the network. Couldn't access the internet via wireless which was also a green light. Replaced DNS addresses with 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 to no avail. Finally pulled the Ethernet cable and was able to access internet via wireless. Doesn't really help with the network connection though as i need to be able to contact the NAS for files. Any ideas?

The Rest... / Re: Large Format

Yes, the owners persuaded me to come out of retirement to give them a hand. Low stress, I set my own hours and I can retire again when I feel the time is right. It's a totally digital environment so no presses, chemistry or plates - just eco-solvent inks.

The Rest... / Re: Large Format

We are running 2 large format Rolands where I work(?) now. Both have built in cutters. Most of our work is large printing for buildings, signs and vehicle wraps. The Rolands seem to be a bit finicky, especially the printheads. We just had the head and encoding strip replaced in the older Roland. The newer Roland (VG640) has 4 print heads. One was replaced about 2 months ago and we just started having problems with another (Y/K) today, so I imagine it will need replacing too. I used to use 42 inch Epson plotters for proofing at the packaging company that I last worked at and they were pretty solid, but the printheads seemed to let go every 5 years or so. We usually just replaced the printer at that point at that facility.

General Prepress / Re: Safely Moving a Proofer

That's all we did with our old 10600 & 9800 back in the day. They survived ok.

Although prepress and printing were good to me over the course of my career, it's just not the case these days. The company that I worked for previously for decades is held above water by a very small core of key production people, most of whom are my age. Some of them have put in for retirement. As they lose these people the ship will go down. Also, check out some of the larger producers, including the company I worked for, on Indeed or Glassdoor and the employee review ratings are very poor - usually only 1 or 2 stars. Low wages, clawed back benefits, no pensions, temp agency employment are what potential applicants can look forward to now. Not a chance in hell I would go into printing if I were 40 years younger now.

Apparently my Pantone swatch libraries in CC2018 are missing some colours (2177). How do I swap in a new swatch library file and where can I get one? Its odd in that the Pantone book I looked at dated from 2017, yet the swatch library in CC2018 is missing colours from the older book.

Couldn't figure it out for a while til I began to suspect what was going on. I ended up marking the faulty relay with a Sharpie and caught her next time she used it to sabotage the processor.

There may be a square shaped plugin relay at fault too. We used to have to replace them once in a while as well. One of my techs saved a faulty relay and used to plug it in to try and get a day off. That didn't last long.

If you take the side panel off (same side as gum pump) I believe there are one or two banks of fuses and plug in relays. There should be a manual that came with the processor that shows the location of F13.

If memory serves correctly we changed the gum every week without fail on our Fuji processor. It was part of a maintenance program I put together based on 750 40 inch plates per week. We did replace the gum pump every two years or so. It's not only "gummy", it's pretty corrosive as well.

It's been almost 3 years since I was laid off from the folding carton packaging company that I worked for. Since then I've been kinda semi-retired, doing part-time gigs for Canada Post and being a municipal cop in the summer seasons in our resort community. The other day I received a call from a former colleague of mine at the packaging company and it turns out that he and his son have started a sign company, which is doing really well. They were looking for a digital tech and thought of me, so it looks like I'm back into the graphics world again, at least for a couple of years. Same front end but totally different outputs - mostly vinyl signs, vehicle wraps, etc. - sounds very Skryber-esque, so I may be back up asking for advice!!

Cool Grey 10 should be ok as it has a reflectance value of only 16%. If you are using Pantone colours instead of Black, you can find the reflectance values for each Pantone Colour here (scroll down to Section 5 of the pdf):
https://www.barcode.graphics/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/bcgcolorguide.pdf

Always ensure that you are using a Pantone Colour with a reflectance value below 28%, otherwise the scanner will not be able to read it.

Normal UPC-A's can be set at 80% minimum to 120% maximum size. You should set the scale within your barcode software - don't scale using Illy or Indy. You can truncate the height either within the barcode software or by masking, but there is a minimum readable height of 0.5 inches.

There is a good article on scaling, sizing and required quiet zones for barcodes here:
https://www.dionlabel.com/application/files/6515/2539/6656/UPC_Barcode_Standards.pdf

One more thing to remember is the line width reduction factor, which takes into account the gain on the press. It reduces the line width of the barcode ever so slightly to compensate for press gain.
