Adobe Acrobat / Re: Best way to flatten a pdf ?
January 15, 2019, 04:57:40 PM
I would have taken the PDF out to the cutter and smashed it flat with the clamp. While you were out there you could also cut it down to size so the customer can see what the finished PDF will look like...

Pressroom / Re: Ink Rotation?

As I understand it, you put the lighter colors (magenta/yellow) down last to minimize the amount of muddying from the darker colors as the sheet runs through the press.

Apparently they don't make them like they used to. The old mac keyboards could be run through a dishwasher and after a suitable dry off time would work just fine (as long as you made extra sure to keep water from the usb plug before hand).

Are you running the output through a RIP? You should be able to tell it to convert to gray at that stage rather than messing with it in InDesign.

Macintosh / Re: Time Machine and OS Install
December 10, 2018, 05:34:46 PM
Didn't Apple add a hidden boot/restore partition to all their computers? Hold down command+ option+ R or something to boot into it it. It lets you wipe the main drive via Disk Utility, and restore/install the OS. If I remember correctly, there is an option to reinstall the factory default OS, or install/restore to the latest OS available.

Sadly for us the corporate office (who is making the decisions) is the IT department.  :strangle:

I can't speak for frailer, but for us the corporate office has us locked into accessing e-mail through a web client, and in particular Chrome (ugh I hate Chrome). We can't even get to the web without being logged in and authenticated which is a huge pain in the back side. At least in theory we can use the outlook app, but to set it up we need to go through IT. <sigh>

It looks like you should be able to set up a rule for your inbox where it will move and/or trash anything after a set date or within a set date range, but I can't find anything where it will look and trash anything older than xx number of days.
What I did:
- Selected an existing message
- In the top bar you get a bunch of options including "Sweep", click on that
- It brings up a dialog pertaining to that e-mail but in the lower left corner there it says "View Rules", click on this
- Now you can set up a new rule by pressing the + button at the top of the listed rules (if there are any)
- You can then do the "It's received within a specific date span..." check and have it move or outright delete the messages.

I think this will apply directly to the Inbox so anytime you open Outlook it will check for messages that match and will move them. Unfortunately I can't see any way to have it look and delete mail that's over say 14 days old or something like that.

Maybe not the best solution and others may have other ideas, but having to use 365 Outlook myself I feel your pain.

CMS - Proofing - Printers / Re: Poll: Work Lighting
December 04, 2018, 05:01:00 PM
The last place I worked where we were doing color correction and trying to be as color accurate as possible we kept the lights off as much as possible. The regular lights were fluorescents, but we even had about half of the safety lights(the ones that can't be turned off) unscrewed so they were out. Our color people each had a viewing booth which were generally only on when hard proofs and/or samples were being reviewed. Most work stations also had small personal viewing booths which were, again, mainly used when reviewing proofs/samples.

In general with the booths off I would guess the ambient light would have been around a 40watt incandescent bulb(the old school ones with the filament, not the LED, halogen, or fluorescent bulbs).

They did something similar with toilet paper a few years ago. Made the rolls narrower, but still charge the same amount. Technically you are getting the same length but...

General Prepress / Re: Spot conversion to CMYK
November 20, 2018, 05:35:08 PM
Using Prinergy here too. We had up until fairly recently been using a look up table for converting spots. This was an old table from before Adobe changed to using Lab for spots so some colors were fairly far off after conversion.  Now we have it set to pull/honor the numbers built into the file, with the lookup table as a fall back. Also in the lookup table we have standard spots like die line, gloss and dull varnish, etc. defined so that these get handled exactly the same for each job.

Does the Pope crap in the woods?

I would guess no the pope doesn't, but I have been hearing Dell advertising black Friday deals for small business on the radio all week. Seems like a good chance that everyone will be having deals on computers this upcoming weekend if not sooner.

Macintosh / Re: Mac Email Client
October 10, 2018, 06:34:47 PM
We have a generic "Prepress" e-mail address that get used mostly to relay job related information. Generally CSRs will send customer files, or links to customer files and that sort of thing there. We also have individual e-mail accounts we use on a more general basis. Say, if I am working on a job and have a question, or need to send off a 'proof is ready' notification I'd use my personal account so the recipient knows who worked on the job, or who to follow up with.

I believe our store front/ web portal orders go through a different workflow, and as such, use a different notification system.

Random Technology / Set Top Box purchase advice
September 18, 2018, 04:58:53 PM
I'm looking to replace my old Apple TV :cane:  with something else.

My old Apple TV has a limited number of apps for content (basically whatever Apple decides to add), so more variety would be nice. I have actually tried the newer 4th gen Apple TV, but that remote... Basically, after about 20 minutes of running through the setup and grabbing apps from the app store, I was fed up with the remote and had resorted to using my old one. After 30 minutes I boxed everything back up and back to the Apple store it went.

At this point I'm leaning towards a Roku, but with 7 or 8 different ones to choose from I'm not sure if spending some extra money for a higher end one would be worth it if the lower end/cost model would work just as well. I am also aware that there are other similar devices out there. Google has one and Amazon as well.

Anyone have any experience they'd care to share? Suggestions, comments? Thanks!
