Pardon me, if this sounds as odd to you as it does to me.

A new client wants us to supply press ready pdfs for flyers and posters with icc profiles and setting appropriate for each press.
We are not allowed to contact these printers directly as we are to be invisible in this production process. Fine, What ever...

Now they tell me that the specs are (for one of them)
"PDF x1 SWOP for Heatset CMYK web press"

This does not specif (to me) what profile they want.
Frankly, I wonder why the printer isn't insisting on applying the profile themselves since they know their press conditions.
Googling this did not give me clarity so what do you guys think?

Joe

PDF/X-1a:2001 does use a SWOP profile. (Screenshot from InDesign export settings.)

People that have really old rips or that are just stupid still want files like these.

Newer APPE workflows won't even accept PDF 1.3...

Maybe they save them to .ps to send to a Harlequin. I didn't think people still ran film?

I had a dream a few weeks ago that I met a dude that had a trade shop that "filled a unique niche"
He ran film...
Not because of being left behind, but because he could do all the crazy trickery like double burns and such.
You gave him the files that you couldn't make work, and he gave you plates.
He was a real character too, cowboy hat and stuff. Man, my dreams are often weird and mind-bendingly detailed.
How will I laugh tomorrow...
when I can't even smile today?

Wow, that is a crazy detailed dream. You on that new LSD micro-dosing kick that the nootropic nuts are all about?

... I think that pretty much covers how we feel about that PDF setting.

My actual concern is that there are a couple of profiles with SWOP on the name.
I do give a rats ass what the printer wants or why, I am going to be responsible for giving them what they think they are asking for.
I cannot find anything online that specifies what "for Heatset CMYK web press" means.

Sounds like the press told sales who told the brooker to tell our receptionist's cousin's brother to tell me...
Just save me a preset or tell me which profile they want...FFS

Yeah there aren't any canned Adobe PDF job options like that. Agreed, tell them to send you their job options they are using.

I suspect you are not well, born. You may need to seek help.
