Anyone make the move yet to Prinergy 9?
Have or do you plan to upgrade your Kodak servers to Windows Server 2019 to be able to run v9?
We are about to schedule Kodak to update our InSite and Prinergy servers to version 9.
We are responsible for the Windows Server 2019 OS purchases however.
Just wondering how all this will go, first time upgrading OS's on the Kodak Servers.
They were installed in January of 2018.
USD 18,708.80
It may be a while...
gotta get a second job to pay for the upgrade...
:shoots_self:
Joe has done.
Yesterday we went to 8.4.1.45 on Win2016.
Sometime soon TBD we will go to 9.0.1 on Win2019.
So far so good...
btw, Kodak has to be involved more than usual due to the server OS change
Yeah the Windows software alone from Microsoft will be $1,500 plus x 2.
Kodak onsite costs are about $7,000....ouch.

Yes. Been there. Done that. We bought the OS from Trusted Tech (https://www.trustedtechteam.com/) for $904.99 x 2 = $1,809.98 total. No tax. No shipping. Got the product keys in a matter of minutes. Didn't have to download anything. Just had to give the Product Keys to the Kodak person that updated the servers.
We have R730 Dell Premium Servers. Kodak told us we should upgrade servers. We chose not to. Kodak onsite charges were about what yours is listed at. David's price on new servers is pretty accurate for what we were quoted.
Windows 2019 Server looks exactly like Windows 10 so if you have used it you'll recognize the interface.
I'm not a fan of VPS+ so far but they are fixing some of the issues. At least now you can view both sides at the same time. And in the latest beta they have made the image quality a whole bunch better.
They have also released Preps 9.0.2 after the release of Prinergy 9.0.1. Preps 9.0.2 is Big Sur compatible so you will need that version of Preps if you need to use it on a Big Sur Mac. Preps 9.0.2 has an issue of throwing up a UTF8 error at times but Kodak says to just ignore it and they may fix it at some point but won't guarantee that they will.
We have issues with Windows Critical Updates on both servers. Fails every time so at the moment we have to download the updates and install them manually.
Price has dropped on Windows 2019 server:
Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Standard - 16 Core + 10 CALs (https://www.trustedtechteam.com/products/microsoft-windows-server-2019-standard-16-core-10-cals?variant=12556411732085)
$875.99 $1,094.99
Great info Joe, thank you.
Thanks for the link too...a lot cheaper than buying straight from Microsoft.
I am a little confused on the whole 16core thing on the Windows licensing.
Our Dell T630 servers are 2x2.40 12 core...so 24 total cores....so it appears Microsoft grants us use of the other 8 cores.
Based off the attached screen shot.
I don't really understand the core thing as far as Windows licensing goes. I just used this calculator.
Windows Server Core Licensing Calculator (https://techlibrary.hpe.com/us/en/enterprise/servers/licensing/index.aspx)
Our CPU's are Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2620 v3 (2 processors) 6 Core
Using the calculator above for 2 processors that are each 6 core the calculator says I need 16 cores. So that is what I bought.
For yours you have 2 processors and each has 12 cores and the calculator shows 24 cores needed for yours.
I agree with you Joe, but of course i have Kodak giving me a link to the Standard 16 core 5/10 CAL version on the Microsoft website.
I will figure it out. Thanks for the input.
The place I bought mine has license calculator too. I think it will run with 16 cores but don't think it would be properly licenses. Try this calculator.
https://www.trustedtechteam.com/pages/calculator
You can also either do a chat on their website or schedule a call with them to ask them questions.

They were installed in January of 2018.
Per Kodak website:
Prinergy Workflow 9.0 requires Microsoft Windows Server 2016, or Windows Server 2019 on one of the following Dell platforms
So why are people paying to upgrade Win 2016 server???
I didn't. We had to upgrade from Windows Server 2012 R2 as Prinergy 9 will not run on it and decided to skip Windows 2016 Server.
Same here, we have 3 servers to upgrade from 2012 R2 to 2019.
Then upgrade to Prinergy 9
Prinergy, InSite and a Prinergy tertiary server.
All scheduled with Kodak for mid Sept. onsite...let the fun begin!!
If your Macs are running Catalina or later you will most likely not be a fan of VPS+. But they are getting some things fixed so that is a good sign. But the product out of the box with Prinergy 9 leaves a lot to be desired.
We updated to Prinergy 9 along with the necessary Windows 2019 upgrades to our servers last week and all went well....BUT...
We are having very sluggish behavior in Preps. We are seeing delays on every move made to edit anything.
Anyone else have this issue? Also some occasional long delays when trying to go and choose a previously made template via Workshop.
A few other instances of slow reactions when hitting the ok button on running process templates.
On the other hand we have noticed significant speed increases in other areas.
Not seeing the Preps issue. What OS version are you running Workshop on?
All Mojave... still....except one Mac was updated to Big Sur and seeing the same thing over there.
Nothing else has changed.
Have not really spent anytime trouble shooting just thought i would see if anyone else has seen this behavior.
Also, any chance you found a way to get rid of the very annoying known bug in Preps 9.0.2...

Submitted it to Kodak. They are aware of it. Says just to click through and ignore as it is not hurting anything. They will fix sometime in the future.
Yeah i have the memo from Kodak...

When I upgraded from Mojave (where I had significant delays) to Big Sur I did a fresh format & install so none of my old account files came over (\Users\~\Library) to the new install. Got rid of all my delays.

Not to worry. I'm sure by Preps version 78 they will have it fixed. :sarcasm:
Good to know Joe and i am seeing the same here.
I am setting up a 2018 mac mini with new install of Big Sur as we speak to replace one of our 2012 Mac Pro's.
I am noticing it is running very well, the delay we see on other stations is not happening.

So you did a fresh install and migrated all your apps from a TM backup....or no? Setting up a new workstation from scratch is time consuming for sure...especially when doing it while trying to work etc.
No. The only thing I imported from Time Machine backup was email. I didn't want any other files related to Creative Cloud or Prinergy system creeping back into the new system. Did a fresh install of all Creative Cloud and Workshop and Preps. However I did manually copy over apps like web browsers and other apps along with their folders in /Users/~/Library/Application Support and /Users/~/Library/Preferences. Just not anything related to Creative Cloud or Prinergy files. Yes it is time consuming but was worth it.

Do you have 8 different bosses on your back telling you to fix it faster?
Going to 9.0.2 on Win2019 tomorrow. Wish me luck.
Be alert for the Page Marks moving in Preps 9.0.2/9.0.3. It can bite you hard. There is a warning on the Partner Place website and in the Prinergy 9.0.2 Release Notes.
Also after we upgraded back in December we could not get software updates to download so we had to download and install them manually until Kodak got that fixed in the last week of December but they had to login and install something separately to do it. We were good at that time. I guess they still are.
Also Michael Balko (Kodak) said Prinergy 9.5 was in final beta testing on the GUA forums a couple of weeks ago which takes about 6 weeks so 9.5 should be available in a month or so. Supposedly the page marks moving will be fixed in that release which has Preps 9.5.
Thank you Joe, and the marks moving... that's not the same old deal where you open the .cfg file and change it to no?
Nope. Prinergy 9.0.2 installs Preps 9.0.3. If you have a login to the Kodak Partner Place go here for the:
Preps 9.0.3 new features, fixed bugs, and known limitations (https://workflowhelp.kodak.com/display/PREPS90/Preps+9.0.3+new+features%2C+fixed+bugs%2C+and+known+limitations)
If you don't have a login here is the gist of it:
QuotePreps Page and Page Bleed Marks may incorrectly appear within live content
Customers who use Preps Page and Page Bleed marks, should consider NOT upgrading to Prinergy 9.0.2 / Preps 9.0.3 at this time, without first understanding the risks.
See Important Note about Page Marks below.
Page Mark properties are not retained when saved with legacy anchor positions.
This is a Preps 9.0.2 and Preps 9.0.3 limitation for impositions using some Page Marks created/edited in previous versions of Preps.
Workaround: To retain legacy mark positions, add "-RETAINLEGACYANCHORMARK:YES" to the "PrepsPrinergy.cfg.template" profile located on the Prinergy server.
Instructions: Setting Integrated Preps preferences - We recommend updating with a Windows text editor (eg. Notepad ++).
~Important Note~
In most cases, "-RETAINLEGACYANCHORMARK:YES" is a viable solution. But, it has been reported that some Page Marks are shifted in Preps 9.0.2 and Preps 9.0.3, as well as, on VPS Output.
For example, in one known case, Page Marks anchored to the Binding Edge on the back of the Signature with "-RETAINLEGACYANCHORMARK:YES" can inadvertently move the mark into the content area and cause spoilage. Please check your VPS carefully. We are addressing these issues in Preps 9.5 (scheduled for Summer 2022 release).
Also Born...have you used VPS + yet. You have to if you are using Catalina or newer. Prepare for disappointment. :rotf: If you are still on Mojave or earlier you will continue to use the legacy VPS.
The version that installs with Prinergy is pretty close to unusable unless they have the latest beta version installed. Or they may have released it from beta and it might install with Prinergy 9.0.2. It has been almost 3 months since I've seen Prinergy. If you need the latest beta I can get it to you. The latest beta is a lot better than what came with our install of Prinergy 9.0.2.
We are on Mojave... for now, we plan to do the Macs OS later... sounds like we should drag our feet but we want to update Adobe CC so likely cannot. I was reading all this these past month and hoping the Prinergy upgrade would be put off long enough that we would get 9.5 instead of 9.0.2 but no luck.
Thanks Joe

Yeah creative cloud made us upgrade too which meant Catalina or later. That made for a busy last month at work for me upgrading 14 Macs to Catalina/Big Sur.
Good luck on the upgrade. I will note that before I left at the end of December we never ran into having those marks move on us. Not sure if they have seen it since the beginning of the year though.
That's a relief indeed, the marks moving into the live work area does not sound like an upgrade to me!
The marks moving is why I have been dragging my heals on the upgrade, even though my boss wants me to upgrade Prinergy. That part scares me.
So we are on Prinergy 9.0.2
We started upgrading macs to Catalina
I knew about VPS+ and clued my friend in...
He can't get it to open a VPS file(s) at all - they are greyed-out / not recognized by VPS+
Does anyone know what I'm missing or need to do?
thanks...
LOfuckingL
added a "+" to the VPS file names and they opened...
There has GOT to be a better way though...
special bonus feature...

What version of VPS+ are you using? You might need to re-install it after Catalina was installed. If it was installed in may still think VPS Legacy is still the default application. Also try doing a COMMAND+I on a VPS file and make sure the default application is VPS+. I never had to rename the VPS files with a plus to open them.
ok, adding + wasn't it
hit cmnd I on a vps file and changed default app to VPS+ for all
seems to be working now, lol, old trick that.
I had already reached out to Kodak, curious what they will say about it.
All's well that ends well.
and thanks... everyone... but David :sarcasm:

So yeah. VPS+
...more like VPS-
it sucks so bad.
can't move the ruler origin to quickly confirm sheet size
it's low res, even vector type
moirês on some screens at some view/zooms
eyedropper is there but does not work
I am so sick of downgrades.
You hear us Kodak?
ugh.
What version do you have? I sent you a link to the latest beta version a few weeks ago via PM. Did you try it? It is much better than what was released with Prinergy 9.x.
We are on 9.0.2.43
you offered to send the beta but I didn't ask (yet)
I would love to try if you would share the link - thanks Joe!
#hope
The link was in the PM I sent you. Do you still have it?
Really don't want to post the link publicly. Kodak frowns on that.
;)
I think you will be pleased with it. I still hated the VPS proof window is constrained in another window but if that is worst thing I could live with it. Actually I don't have to live with it now. ;D
It is indeed less bad
thanks brother 8) 8) 8)
Yeah still not as good as the legacy VPS but life moves on. It is now useable. I couldn't say that about what shipped with Prinergy 9.x.

I just accidentally figured out the eyedropper DOES work and it's actually better!
You click and drag a marquee and then it gives you percentages.... and seems more accurate than legacy VPS
:winner:
Legacy VPS did that I think. Right? ;D
If it did I wish I knew it years ago, I used to get all different percentages depending on zoom and which dots it was picking up

Thanks for confirming. I was worried my mind is going. :o
Thats news to me too... :P
Ya learn something new everyday.
The BIG question is... does anyone know what the ETA is of Prinergy 9.5?
::)
This has been a very interesting thread. We upgrade to 9.x next month, and the transition to the latest version of Preps has me nervous. We have a library of master signatures that we import from and add to regularly, and it has taken us years to cultivate it. I am hoping these legacy JTLP files still are recognized and importable. Kodak indicates that yes, they should be.
Like others on this thread, I am eager to get this done as the first domino to fall allowing me to update a plethora of other things - Mac OS, Creative Cloud, etc.
As an aside, it is good to see this place still going strong. I remember the good old days spending time learning on here, and it is fantastic to see so many old familiar names still contributing after all these years.

Hi Chris...good to hear from you. Those files should import fine in Prinergy. I never had any issues going from 8.x to 9.0 so I can't see 9.5 causing any issues. But I won't see 9.5 as I recently retired from the printing world so good luck to all of you still doing it.
Hi Chris!
Congratulations on your retirement Joe, all the best to you. Hello Tracy, good to see you again! Hope all is going well.
