General Prepress / Re: Xerox - digital press?

Quote from: Sparky on October 23, 2007, 11:08:01 PMKermit, I just moved from a shop who bought a Docucolor 250 (Xerox) and thought they were going to crash the variable data market and make a killing. Then they started to run 4/4 newsletters and brochures on it and sell it as offset printing. (damn if they didn't get their hands caught in the jar) ::) Their "click" charges were 10¢ for black and 25¢ for a color page 11 x 17

man, did they get ripped off--either that, or someone did the math WAY wrong.

Maybe with everything amortized, machine cost and everything, it's a quarter.  But only a truly ignorant person would sign a contract that said "black clicks are 10 cents, color are 25 cents".  It's more like a penny and a half black, and 9 cents color.

People generally don't take the time to do the math right, or report correctly what they hear.

Anyway, systems that can change the "plates" for each sheet out of the press can nicely complement systems that don't.  It's the guy in the middle, who has to run the business, who is responsible for doing it all correctly.  Unfortunately, as we all know, that doesn't happen all the time.
