Title: Jerry Sienfeld & Microsoft
Post by: delooch on August 22, 2008, 01:24:09 PM
I just read that Seinfeld is the new spokesman for MS.. Hes going to be doing Vista ads with Bill Gates.

Didnt Jerry always rock some crazy ass mac on his desk in the show? I thought the dood was a mac fiend.

Yeah, I remember the thing with the Mac. Money can buy anything though. Even Seinfeld.

My, some nice in depth comments there. Microsoft is looking to increase the visibility and opinion of Vista. There could be worse people that they could've selected. It's supposedly an anti Apple ad in reference to the "Hi I'm a Mac" commercial set. I figure Jerry had a reason for doing it and I say more power to him.

Right, monkeyman, but Jerry Seinfeld?!? He's about as "hip and now" as a 3.5" floppy!

Post by: Monkeyman on August 22, 2008, 05:24:20 PM
Correct youston. He's definitely not hip today but neither is Microsoft. Microsoft is paying Jerry $10 million and spending $300 million on the ad blitz. To quote Jerry "What's up with that?".
It will be interesting and probably entertaining to see how this all works out.

To be fair, I would have done it for $10 million too.

Is it really that shocking that he's doing it? He did a commercial for HP a while back. I think he was shilling for Bee Movie. Maybe he has something else coming out that he wants to make a few bucks and promote at the same time. I'm with Joe, I'd do it for 10 mil. By the way, what would you do with the money? And you can't say "buy the Cleveland Cavaliers."

I've got no problem with Jerry taking the gig ... hell, I wish someone would pay ME $10 million to say their shit didn't stink ... or like maybe to recommend their prepress forum to folks in the industry who I meet on my travels (Joe, call me babe. Ciao.).

I just think they could've picked someone a little more 'hip.' Especially if their aim is to top the "I'm A Mac" ads.

Classic.... Is her unitard cougar print? That would probably be more appropriate.

You've officially made me feel dirty for being online on a Friday night. Now I have to go out and have some drinks to forget this ever happened. Sad thing is, I know it will be here when I get home (your mom & the internet)... :puke2:

Hey, no thanks necessary man! I wouldn't be doing my job, if I didn't make you feel dirty. It's the price we pay for sitting at the computer on a Friday night... L-O-S-E-R-S! (Besy Jim Carrey voice)

Now go get wasted, and forget about my mom. She will be passed out upstairs on vicodin and Old English 800, and I will be fumbling around with your porn collection. Wait! I shouldn't be telling you that!

See, the problem is - it's not aimed at tech savvy people. It's targeting the Sheep, the ones who will have NO idea who Bill Gates is, and don't care, but will surely recognize Seinfeld. That, and it's going to be a "story-line" campaign, this isn't just a one-off commercial. It will be interesting to see how it progresses though, they know they have to salvage the crapfest that was Vista. And if Microsoft is capable of anything, it's throwing obscene amounts of money at a project.

First impressions seem to be a very important thing when it comes to advertising and IMO this makes as good a first impression as Vista did.

Easy to forget how close Apple was to going belly-up back then.        The book about Jobs "iCon", is a very interesting read. Remember, the one he wouldn't allow to be sold in Apple Stores, on pain of flogging if any employee slipped up.
He's just a much more interesting character than Gates, whatever his obvious flaws. I'm afraid reading about Gates would have me   :sleepy:  in no time.  Sheer rat-cunning is a handy attribute, but not inherently interesting.

Maybe they only ever planned on having those few ads featuring Seinfeld & Gates? You know - as advertising to get a buzz going? As for creating the spots on Macs, well duh. It's an ad agency, one of the most sought after in the world. Why wouldn't they use Macs? Did everybody think they'd mandate that their creatives would have to use Windows machines all of a sudden just because of the client?
