Title: A look back at 2012
Post by: Laurens on January 01, 2013, 03:39:06 PM
I added a page about 2012 (http://www.prepressure.com/prepress/history/events-2012) to the 'history of prepress & printing' section of my site. Besides a lot of take-overs and mergers, nothing much seems to have happened - especially not on the software front. Did I miss something?

Saw that from your Twitter feed the other day, nice roundup! Can't think of anything that skated by, maybe the "No Print Day" diaster by Toshiba. (http://deadtreeedition.blogspot.com/2012/06/10-questions-about-toshibas-no-print.html)

Thanks, I did read that report about disappearing jobs but assumed it was older. It must have been the term 'desktop publishers' that fooled me.

.... and talking of desktop publishers: I dusted off a page that had been in my DRAFT folder for far too long: a picture guide to 25 years of prepress (http://www.prepressure.com/prepress/history/picture-guide)

Ah, the memories  :old:

Get the sideburns! Now I've got the Epson V330 Photo set up at home, prepare yourself for a frailer photo, same era. You will ROTFALTYWY (till you wet yourself).
Oh, and the daggy girl-hair.     Farrah F-M was a cutting-edger, it's now apparent.

$36,000 ???  I get £8 an hour (about $13) for a 26 hour week - before tax.  That's £10,816 a year or about $17,630 and £8,653 or $14,104 after tax.  I would ask about jobs over there but I don't think Homeland Security would let me in.

The median wage sounds high compared to the offers I've been getting recently and the shit offers you see on craigslist. Whatever, these cheap-ass employers will get what they pay for: Tards. And a lot of reprints.

I think 36K a year = about 20 bucks an hour in the US.

Post by: JCPenfold on January 04, 2013, 09:59:43 AM
$36k = $17.30/ hr

$20/hr = $41,600

and you're right employers definitely get what they pay for, if they want to pay $12-15/hr they'll get someone right out of school who will leave as soon as they are properly trained for anything that pays better

Ah, the memories  :old:

I used to run the Creo trendsetter as a proofer becasue a salesman at my old shop refused to use a inkjet proof. Spent all that money and within 6 months we were only using it for dielines. Guess a $800 proof was a bit of a hard sell. Had that Galileo there as well. AGFA wasn't pleased when they walked in and saw the Creo device.

BNC token ring networking connector.

It is a BNC connector, but for Ethernet, not for Token Ring. When I looked up the image I originally also did not recognize it any longer, even though I've plugged in a million of these. I do still remember thinking 'What idiot now decided to use a slightly wider modem cable' when they introduced the current type of plug. I think I still have an ethernet terminator lying around here somewhere. Yup, in those days even the network had a terminator, just like good old SCSI.
