Webstain, heheheh.

Actually, all in all Joomla is a pretty sweet setup. Once I learned how CMS sites work I knew I would never go back to hand-coding a static site unless it was only 2 or 3 pages.

Nevertheless, prepare to get enraged! :death:

I have played with it before but it was an already set up site. I have a bottle of klonopin here so I should be good. Be prepared for questions later in the day.

I'm currently doing our newspaper web site in Joomla 1.7.2 and as gnubler said, it is a nice piece of software but there are plenty of oddities. Especially when you start dealing with 3rd party themes and extensions. My rage a couple of days ago was a 10px white margin on each side of the site header and I finally found the code buried in some "special" css files. :death:

Once you start adding plugins and extensions the joy begins because you are guaranteed problems. A barebones Joomla site is fairly easy to install and operate (except for those little surprises like Joe found)

I still haven't upgraded from 1.5. I'm afraid.

My little surprise was from a 3rd party free theme. You get what you pay for.

I started with 1.5 and am slowly getting the basic idea of it. Doing it in between making plates and shit is making it a bit difficult but I'm getting it done.

I told my bosses I cannot do prepress and work on websites concurrently...way too dangerous if working on live sites.

So now they block off afternoons for "web only" work. I treasure those afternoons with all my heart.

I'll split these comments off into a Joomla thread in a minute so as not to take away from PDFLib but...

I started the site in 1.5 but it's end of life is less than a year away so I tried to convert what I had to 1.7. Disaster ensued so I started off fresh with 1.7. I'm liking it better than 1.5.

Well you just convinced me to delete 1.5 and load 1.7. No reason to do all of it and just have to do it again. When installing it with host gator should I use something after the / or just leave it?
Title: Re: Joomla

I'm afraid of 1.5 templates and extensions not playing nice with 1.7. Don't dare touch it.

If you're building a site I would put it in a subfolder and hide it from search engines (use robots.txt file to disallow all bots)

Everything should be in the public_html folder.

You mean until it goes live right? I find it's easy to create a sub domain in CPanel and assign it's own folder there (not in public_html). Build it there and then when ready move it to public_html and modify the configuration.php file to pint to the new location.

Yest, if you have the files in public_html. If you placed the files in a folder inside of public_html then you need to enter that folder name in that box.

I have jack shit anywhere. This it totally from scratch. I obviously need to build it somewhere then transfer it when it goes live. I'm just bumbling around this with no clue.

Create sub domain called

beta.ontargetprinting.com in the folder

/beta

not public_html/beta

It will create the beta folder for you. Then copy the joomla compressed installer to this folder and within the CPanel file manger select the compressed file and click the uncompress button.

Not sure on joomla but you may need to create the database and assign it permissions before you start the install You will need the name of your database and the user name you assiged to the database. All done in the database manager in CPanel.

then start the installer by entering

http://beta.ontargetprinting.com/ (http://beta.ontargetprinting.com/)

in the browser. Follow the prompts and make sure you install the sample data or you'll be lost.

Think I've got that down, now on to creating articles with some bacon ipsum filler.

Might leave early and pick up another 64oz prepress energy drink.

Yes. 100% me...well other than a real designer doing some of the design. I did the technical side. No one else to blame!

I will once it goes public. It is not a W2P site for our commercial printing business or anything like that. It is just a web site for our local small town newspaper that we own. Mostly just local news and events.

The insanity of web development mainly. I had an issue yesterday where an article with text and 5 images wasn't displaying correctly and the lightbox effect wasn't working for the photos. Two hours later I found it was because a lightbox caption for one of the photos had double quotation marks in it and screwed the whole page up. The double quotation marks for the regular photo caption worked fine but using the same caption in the lightbox settings blew the whole thing apart. :death:

Man, I know hunting down hose thing can take ages, you'll go blind staring at the code looking for whatever it is that's screwing it all up.
The store front we use is real picky about spaces in the image names and any of the variable file names. It took me forever to find just the one that had a space in it that was jacking up the entire page.

Congrats on the finish.
Can we see a preview?

Those are some local advertisers that we gave free ads to for the first couple of weeks. If we sell one ad at the price we are asking we'll be very profitable.

It's always a delicate balance trying to get the sidebars to be filled with the exact amount of content as the articles. Hence, some white space.

And give me a break...PAP? We're not that advanced. Just plain old Adobe InDesign. (I didn't write the content...just put it where it is.)

Sure, go ahead and email ME!

I'm pretty sure there is an extension for it (bit late now though) - take a look at a friend's site http://5ringsfitness.net/ (http://5ringsfitness.net/) (wife set this up for him and he's sort of mangled it but he's fully maintaining it now himself, so that says something for joomla, dude's a total noob)

Down on the right column there's his facebook and twitter feeds.  Not a floater though. "Activity Stream"

Yes, there is an extension for those but I didn't like it cluttering up the sidebar. For the Facebook one you don't even need an extension. Just grab the code from Facebook and add it to a module. I wanted it in a slide drawer that slid out when a user clicked the button. That way it stays out of the way unless the user opens it. I found a couple of extensions that were close but one didn't work correctly and the other one was pretty intrusive in that it came popping out if your mouse even got close to the edge of the browser window.
