Adobe InDesign / Re: Using TIFF & EPS versus AI & PSD
November 28, 2007, 08:38:37 PM
For the folks that are using .ai and .psd files With InDesign ...
I would suggest
looking into PDF files from those applications.
That is the current Adobe workflow and will be the workflow of the future.
PDF is the only way to retain bleed, placeable layers and crop marx with Illustrator.
Photoshop PDF (.pdp) is the ONLY way to retain round trippable vector files with Photoshop.
For two years now, I have not used any Adobe files other than .pdf/.pdp - and .indd, of course (well - almost).

I don't think printers should "guarantee" archiving for any length of time.
It is up to the customer to have their files ready to go.
That being said:
I have the last 7 years "online" and can retreive any of those files in a minute or two.
I keep it all - original files, working files, lnks, fonts, non trapped and trapped "RIP" files -
imposition files and RIP data files.

Well worth the price.
For 10 seats - I thought it was only about $700.

The elegant solution is ZIP Xtreme...not cheap but elegant.

CMS - Proofing - Printers / Re: HP Z2100 vs Z3100

Check out which Rampage is planning to support.
(Or ORIS if you are piping through that)
I hear the Heidi RIP is supporting the 3100 now with, possibly, no plans to support the scaled down version.
Seems as if 12 colors will be more accurate than 8 in a contract proofing environment.

General Prepress / Re: InBooklet & crossovers

Make a single page PDF from InDy with bleeds
Use multi page import to create a new InDy document with the placed PDFs
Use InBooklet on the new document
The PDFs are done deals - and nothing will move.
If you need to make changes to the "placement" document
the "imposition" document will link right up

General Prepress / Re: GOE Pantone New System?

At this point it is based on RGB
but you know the print artists will get hold of it soon and be submitting files.
We have it in the ordering plans and will certainly be able to handle it when the files start rolling in.
The idea sems to be a good one.
More colors - fewer mixing colors.
The books are set up in what seems to be an intuitive manner.

We will see ...

Why do you care to get rid of the extra data, if it will not print?
