We have an outside vendor that insists that we send the Illy CS3 files only. They won't even take a PDF. So, kinda what you said, but not really.

The beauty of this whole scam is that it includes Acrobat X and in just a few short months Adobe will release CS 6.5 with Acrobat XI. Early adoption is not one of my favorite things but if you don't upgrade to each new version it ends up costing the same or more if you skip a version when you do finally upgrade. Adobe has you by the short hairs no matter what you do.

I wonder if anyone has clocked the upgrade timeline. I bet they have it set to something like 0.8 x the length of the previous upgrade. It's geometric, not linear. :angry: I try hard not to harbour malign feelings towards Adobe, but it's becoming harder. And that's not including the outa phase Acrobat releases that Joe mentions. GRRR!
I was looking at the pricing structure for their "cloud" subscription option (makes me throw up a little more every time I hear that term) and it's actually cheaper for somebody using single licenses, especially given the shorter release time between each version. For shops that have to carry multiple licenses for workstations though, boned.
I just watched one of their videos about the "Cloud". User can use the apps from any device, PC's, Macs, tablets, phones...any device with web access. So it is bring the reality of us getting jobs that were created from designers phones. :death:
You can get the whole Master Collection for $49 per month ($588 per year). That's not a bad deal if you are one that uses it a lot. Cheaper than trying to keep up with their 12-18 month release cycle.

The only reason we "upgraded" to CS5.5 was because of version to version incompatibility.
I posted in another thread. Adobe is now going to a yearly cycle. "Major" releases (6,7,8) every 2 years and 6.5,7.5,ect. every year between them. So expect to shell out money every year to keep current.

I can just see somebody subscribing to the Cloud, then Apple will make some big change in their OS or hardware again, and the next Adobe upgrade will only work with the new stuff. I would also like to know what happens if you lose your internet connection. You can't use CS6?
I've already seen complaints on the Adobe forums on that subject. They way they have trouble with their activation servers, I can imagine what the Cloud would be like.

I saw complaints when this subscription thing started on the Adobe forums. Some people couldn't get it to work for weeks. One guy never got to use his the whole first month, then Adobe cancelled his subscription. I'd hate to have to trust their servers to use software.

At this point can't give a 2 year projected cost and that is what I wanted to find out so I can ask for money... waiting till something real comes out I guess.

Sounds like they acted before thinking it through. They probably just can't comprehend a computer without internet access. But I think you can still get the boxed version of CS6 without "The Cloud". I'm betting it will probably be the last version where the boxed version is available. Well, maybe 6.5 but from 7 on I'll bet the could is your only option.
Still, on the pricing structure, we have 14 licenses of CS 5.5. If we upgrade to the cloud, the first year will run us $5038.32. After the first year, assuming it is $50 per year it will be $8400 per year. :wow:
If we just upgrade to the CS6 boxed version it will run us $5250 and will last until whenever the next version is released. Either way Adobe is the big winner in this ripoff operation.
funny about the pharma work, I guess it doesn't matter if they broker it out to places like this where everyything is connected to the internet. And the last place I worked. And the place before that. Great security there.
At our facility there are two laptops connected to high speed for email and FTP, but they are independent of the internal workstation network. Our clients are very paranoid about security. Inspections happen frequently.
I wonder what the brokers tell big pharma. Worked on their stuff for years thru brokers. Probably just lie, like they are known to do.
Same here, we do pharma work and financial for other shops. I was told I'd have to sign a NDA but I haven't seen one yet. Only place I worked where I had to sign a NDA was when we were doing the materials for the Mercedes SLR McLaren.
Here is the latest info I got from Adobe on the CS6 subscription for site and offline installations.
It answers some - but not all - of the questions.

Yeah, in my Wife's place of business (an ad agency) they have a secure area that does work for govt. agencies and it's just that - SECURE. The people in that environment only have internet access as allowed in a SCIF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensitive_Compartmented_Information_Facility), and I wonder how this kind of limitation will affect running software that requires checks to an un-secure outside server. I'll have to remember to ask her if they plan on upgrading all their workstations or not.

There's some kind of Digital Publishing Suite that started last year that required some kind of subscription so that publishers could collaborate and upload stuff, but I don't think it involved the actual applications themselves.
Interesting. Last night I got sent a survey from a survey group I joined to make a little extra cash. Turns out it from Adobe, asking questions like do you plan to upgrade to CS6, what new features do you think you'll like, do you plan to start a subscription, etc. Seems to me they should have been asking this stuff before they changed all their upgrade policies and went up in the clouds. Oh, well, made $3 off the survey.
