Kodak Systems / Prinergy upgrades
March 31, 2008, 04:07:53 PM
We are on 4.0.2.0.38
We were aware of problems (archive) with 4.0.2.1e so we held off.
Now we are thinking of 4.0.2.2e because it has some desired fixes (like Workshop sync/refresh w/ database fixes) so we're looking at "3 hours down" to do a 2-step upgrade.
Does anyone know of problems doing upgrades to the servers?
Or problems w/ 4.0.2.2e?

Kodak Systems / Prinergy RIP selection
March 26, 2008, 10:40:18 AM
We notice that certain jobs (with transparency and/or other complexities) will proof OK with the CPS1 but will fail at the plater w/o error or will plate with a few tiny artifacts (thin KO lines for instance) so we switch to the Adobe PDF rip engine and they go OK.
We understand that there's possible issues proofing with 1 rip then plating with another, but we had no alternative.
I'm looking to find out:
1. Is this happening to other users?
2. Is there a better alternative?

WTF!
I am so sick of opening Q7 files that I know have layers and the layer palette shows none and objects act like they're locked instead. Sometimes the file is fine. Same mac, different mac, 7.0, 7.1, nothing seems to matter. I figure it's about 50/50 chance in my experience. Anyone else noticing this?

ps: hey Quark, FiretrUCK you very much!

Macintosh / OSX10.4.11, Classic mode, PrepsPro and you
February 06, 2008, 11:11:55 AM
I run 10.4.11, BarcodePro launches in Classic mode. When I quit BarcodePro, is "Classic" still running transparently? (no icon in dock)
Reason I ask is that Preps won't launch until I restart the mac, (gives a specific error regarding classic running,) so I was wondering if I can find/quit classic instead somehow (and avoid the restart)???

Thanks in advance

The Rest... / Powerpoint to print
January 07, 2008, 12:19:56 PM
I had a "job" last week that gave me some surprising results. Client supplied 8.5 x 11 PPT doc for a 30" iris output. I made sure the client understood the resolution wouldn't be very good, so OK.
Being the prepress expert, I ignored the client-saved 200K .jpg and made my own 400K .tif and output at the scaled size.
The result was not readable, extremely poor.
On a hunch, I replaced my .tif with the client's .jpg and reoutput. The quality was about twice as good! And definately readable.

I would not have (and didn't) guess that, I'm not a PPT expert by any means, so there may be a simple explanation.

Adobe Acrobat / Third party software for PDF editing
November 08, 2007, 04:07:16 PM
I'm looking for some recommendations for some extra horsepower w/ PDF editing, we have a PDF workflow and all operators have Pitstop. We also have a couple of Kodak tools that came w/ Prinergy that work in Acrobat. The boss misses the tools we had in Brisque for fast editing of minor issues right in the ripped data (not back at native files) "Presstouch© this and go to plate"
Any and all comments are welcome, I'm only familiar with the names of some (possible) contenders:
Neo
Oris
Supercolor
Onevision
Quite a box of tricks

NOTE to Prinergy users that use Preps as floating - launched through Workshop:
To make marks NOT move with creep (shingle) here's how:
1) Use Text edit to open file AraxiPreps/Profiles/PrepsPrinergy/PrepsPrinergy.cfg
2) Find type "ShingleCropMarks: YES" and change YES to "NO"
3) Save and close config file.

Note, If you run Preps from the desktop, you do the same change to the Preps.cfg file and need to do it on each workstation....I think.
