I have a low-end Dell not quite three years old, and my original service contract is up for renewal. Is it worth it? It's $186 a year. I got the first one on a much better deal, but now it's really out of my budget.
I'm not a PC person but that sounds like a lot for a year

Just like any other insurance...only if you need to use it.
Is Dell still a thing? What about Gateway?

Gateway Today
Joining Acer
In October 2007, Gateway was acquired by Taiwan-based Acer Inc., and the combined entities now comprise the third-largest PC company in the world.
We had a good experience or two with Acer (home PC notebook(s))
I have an Acer Chromebook that is about 10 years old. Old enough it no longer receives updates but still works.
All of our Windows computers are Dell including our servers.
We renew all the service contracts on our servers.
Three of which are Kodak Prinergy and InSite and a Prinergy tertiary server as well.
The other is our Heidelberg Prinect server.
I only renew service contracts on a few Dell PC's that are mission critical.
Our shipping station and our PC that runs a Fiery Server for our Epson P9000 and it hosts our Fiery Hot Folders that we use in Prinergy and on our Mac desktops that print to a Konica Minolta c300i that sits in the middle of our Prepress dept.
We have roughly 25 Dell Desktops and Laptops throughout our shop.
I have no issues with Dell at all and their service is outstanding.
I have been buying Dell only products for the past 13 years at our shop.
