General Prepress / Working from Home / Coronavirus
March 20, 2020, 05:03:41 AM
I was already walking 45mins to work so I didn't have to get the bus but self isolating has made us think again.  The boss is diabetic and I have immune system issues since chemo so we took the decision to close the shop to visitors and I took my work mac home.
We've actually been quite busy the last 3 days but IDK how long that's going to last.  I'm in touch with the boss via WhatsApp and picking up work emails so I can do the work here at home with no problems.  Most of our customers are in contact on email and I can keep in touch with them by phone too if necessary.
I send any print jobs back to our shop via Dropbox and the boss is there to run the printing side.  Deliveries by overnight courier so no change there either.
So far the impact on the business has been minimal.  So far.

I hope you don't mind me posting a link to another forum but this story needs to get around.

Anyone else had issues like this?  I won't be subscribing anyway.

Digital Printing / Upgrading headache
July 17, 2017, 07:15:12 AM
We been using Fiery Workstation 4 on Windoze 7 PCs to print to a couple of Xerox Docucolor 240s.  All working OK but the PCs getting old and flaky.  Boss says let's get some macs in and I'm like wow ok that would be much better.  So we set it up - networking goes like a breeze, no problems.  Can't add the DC240s as printers on the network . . .

It turns out the macs running El Capitan are 'incompatible' with the DC240s and there is apparently (according to Xerox) no solution.

Options now are
1) copy every print file from the macs to the PC server (backsaved) and print from there
2) buy newer digital print machines
3) ditch the macs and get some newer PCs to do the artwork on
4) quit my job, retire from printing altogether and let someone else worry about it

Freelance / Freelance Woes
August 14, 2014, 07:00:58 AM
I used to work Freelance from home but had to get a proper job when the work dried up.  I stay in touch with some of the people I used to work for and each summer I do Holiday Cover for 2 weeks.

Just done the Holiday Cover for this year, starting work early and finishing early so I can get home to work on anything that comes in.  Not a peep.  Nada.  Zip.  No work came in over the 2 weeks.  Now I remember why I quit Freelance.

General Prepress / Worst Typos
October 26, 2012, 07:29:39 AM
Collecting typos has long been a hobby of mine, so I thought a new thread was called for.  Add you favourite examples.

Here's a recent collection to get the ball rolling:  http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/gallery/2012/oct/25/worst-typos-pictures
