Our guy that does all the backups said when he copies jobs to dvd and we have alias files/folders in the job linking to art, previous job, whatever, the alias is picking up the actual jobs and including them in the backup.

Is there a way to not include the alias' linked files? I've looked for this, but must be looking in all the wrong places.

Why would you archive aliases and not the actual files? How is he burning them? Talk to me.

In our active job folder, we often link to older jobs for reference. When backing up (actually archiving) we don't need to archive those jobs twice (or more). But we would like to retain the alias because it will show the reference. When it picks up the alias' job, the archives get huge.

Hope this made sense.

It does, thanks for explaining. What software are you using to burn these archives?

You need to break the link between the 2. Move the files somewhere else, or nesting them in a folder should do the trick. The point is breaking the link to the aliases so that they can't/won't pull the linked files by hiding them.

I end up putting a text file with the job # or a shortcut with the job # in my jobs that I pickup. You won't have the link but you'll know the job #.

Our guy said he has hundreds of jobs to archive. At the moment he is copying to a drive connected to his mac, then disconnecting from the network, so the alias' can't find their links. We talked about looking for the alias files and removing before archiving, but some are still active. And we really don't want to lose the alias itself. We're trying to find a faster solution than touching each job.

Joe

So what software is he using that actually goes and finds the linked files?

Nothing I know of will go and get the original file of an alias so I had to ask? I've had people send me a DVD full of aliases before and there wasn't any of the linked files included. :rotf:

Well, you've asked him once, I have asked him twice... I was going in the same place you were with that particular question.

In 2014, I don't understand why anyone would still back up to DVD, unless they were really bored and needed to fill the time...
If backing up to DVD, I can't see how you would not use something like NeoFinder
Used to be CD finder before, by the looks. Once they're catalogued, it's seconds to search for anything on any of the DVDs. A waste of time otherwise.
Or am I rabbiting on about nothing here...   (Geez these emoticons are ugly, Joe).

I use DiskCatalogMaker here but I have it to catalog hard drives since we backup to hard drives instead of DVD.

(yeah, I've been meaning to replace those emoticons...just haven't gotten around to it yet.)

He's not using any special software. He said that OS 10.7.5 automatically brings in the linked files. (I'm going to need to test this myself.)

We're using DiskTracker for the cataloging.

I can certainly see the system doing that, JUST using the system to BU. I use Toast myself, and burn Blu-Rays. Too much work to archive burning to DVDs, I'd have 500 of them for one year alone. Files are getting WAY too big to even consider that an option.
