Title: photo slideshow software
Post by: delooch on January 14, 2009, 12:34:59 PM
i got "volunteered" to produce a dvd photo slideshow with music for a memorial..  does anyone out there have any experience with this?
what im looking for is some **free** software that will do this, Ive got Picasa 3 (it does a good job, but id like a little more control over the text slides) is there something better i should be looking at?
even if it doesnt output to DVD, thats fine, i have ways around that..
thanks!

I don't dabble in video, but doesn't iDVD (or whatever it is that comes loaded on new Macs) do stuff like that? A friend of mine, who's a complete moron, has made and edited several videos on his iMac laptop that he's uploaded onto Youtube...with credits and captions and music.

i know it isnt free, but on some macs we have gotten at work the whole "ilife" package was bundled in.  if you have that, i movie is a great tool for slideshows.  i have made many movies and slideshows with it.

imovie, iphoto, itunes and idvd all work seamlessly - and if you have the "ilife" suite you are in business.

Nero on the PC works well but it's not free. If you've bought a DVD drive in the last 5 years you probably have a disk with it on it.

They also have a 15 day demo you can try out.

QuoteThe Nero 9 trial version can be tested for 15 days starting from the date of installation.

AVCHD authoring and playback as well as MPEG-4 and BD-AV formats are not supported in the Nero 9 trial version.

Actually, I did know delooch uses Winders, based on his other posts...blindly assumed he had a Mac, too.

the show is for my co-workers memorial this weekend, normally i wouldnt give a shit about the output,  because i dont care to make DVD slideshows for a living, and i dont want to be asked to do it again.. but as this was a friend, i want it as polished as can be.

On Nero it's called "Make Photo Slide Show (DVD)". I've never used that particular part of Nero but if it's like the rest of Nero I'm sure it will do the job.

well one way is a trap, and the other an escape route..  choose wisely.

so here is a good laugh-
i scanned in like 230 photos for a 15 minute looping presentation. took me about 3 attempts of authoring the show until i got all the slides/text/transitions to my satisfaction - about 4 hours of time..  I load the thing into my DVD player last night for a test run, about halfway through the show, i notice a photo with the guy standing in front of a large poster of a chick with her ass spread wide open.  I dont know how the hell his sisters didnt see that when they gave me the photo, or how i didnt catch it on the scan/crop. i guess i was just looking at faces.
redo # 5 coming up!
Oh, and Picasa3 turned out to be the best thing going for free. Only outputs to windows media, but i had an app to convert that to dvd... (convertX to DVD)

I'd print that one out and use it as artwork on the DVD label.
