Bindery / Laninateing and added weight.
May 08, 2008, 10:34:06 AM
This is a pretty obscure question and I'll preface it with the scenario. We have a job that is being laminated and we need to ship it by truck when finished. Does anyone have a clue what kind of weight would be added to a printed piece by laminating both sides of the sheet with a 1.5 mil laminate? Would it double the weight, or maybe half again? Any ideas? We're trying to quote shipping, the paper is easy to figure but not sure what the plastic will do to the equation.

Adobe Acrobat / PDF errors and fixes
March 25, 2008, 09:46:32 AM
We all work with PDF and many of us have PDF workflows. My original reason for finding an online forum was because of a PDF error so... I'd like to dedicate a thread to strange PDF errors and the workarounds used by my fine and fiesty peers here on b4P. Some of this is covered in other threads but I think it would be nice to consolidate the information.

One problem I encounter in supplied PDFs is "ActiveX Object missing". This causes the job to fail in my RIP. This is usually caused by a PDF created by Quark with OPI active, (like an ad) and placed into another layout, particularly InDesign. The OPI information causes InDesign to see the object as active instead of static. My solution, is to open the placed PDF, use PitStop to remove OPI, update the link and re-export. This fixes the problem.

Adobe Acrobat / Adding Indicia to PDF
March 12, 2008, 11:41:56 AM
Okay, I don't know if this has been covered or not and I'm too lazy to go digging. I just found a trick for adding a mailing indicia to a PDF. Anyone who has a direct mail department will appreciate this. In our case, we own mail permits in a couple different cities and I have indicias on hand to place as art when the client doesn't own their own mail permit. I am always having to place this art last minute and a lot of my work comes in as PDF. I used to resort to placing the page in InDesign and adding the mail bug then re-exporting... PITA!

I just realized that you can add an indicia as a watermark, which is under the Document menu of Acrobat. You can't drag it and have to type in coordinates which is no biggie if you're used to Preps. You can also save it as a preset for those repeat offenders. Make sure you set the range too or the watermark will land on all pages.

Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat 8 Bouncing in the Dock
November 29, 2007, 03:37:12 PM
Okay kiddies, I haven't seen this covered yet and it sounds petty at first but the Acrobat icon bouncing in the dock is driving me APE SHIT! I'm thinking they did it because Acrobat now takes a full 30 seconds to open which is paralleled only by Illustrator.

Seriously tho, maybe I'm just missing something, is there a preference or something I am overlooking to get it to stop begging for attention? I have a million things going on, multiple desktops through desktop manager and I know what is open and not. I will get to Acrobat when I am ready, I don't want to be annoyed by a bouncing dock icon!!! It's not just upon opening, if I open a PDF, then go to say Preps to reference something for a minute, there it is, bouncing away. Lame Adobe, just plain LAME!!!

Oh, and I know 30 seconds to launch an app doesn't sound like a reason to complain but you guys know the time constraints in a production environment! It might not be so bad if the damn thing didn't crash so easily. I can easily start and quit Acrobat 20 times in a day. I'm thinking after a few months of burning time waiting for Acrobat, Adobe owes me and my company some money! Hell, I can get my entire computer to restart in 30 seconds and this NECESSARY application takes that long to get it's shit together?

Freelance / Web Design
October 09, 2007, 11:15:49 AM
Anyone do design for web as well as print? I have a project where I need to design a magazine and a web page but I don't know how . I know Adobe has a web design program but I haven't tried it. I am a pretty serious application head and can pick up most software in a heartbeat. Should I go with one of these design programs or try to tackle html? Any advice on the subject is welcome.

The client has already purchased the domain name as well as a hosting service.

Pressroom / Printing Metallic ink
September 25, 2007, 03:16:07 PM
Okay, I have worked with at least 4, well trained sheetfed operators and now have two different stories on the order of laying ink down when using a metallic.

The first way I learned to strip/trap for a metallic job was, metallic is opaque and should be printed last since it will make the shape of the object and cover the trap of the other colors. I always trap/knock out because overprint with metallic is a nightmare.

Today, I had to replate a job because the pressman is printing metallic first and letting the black make the shape, (it's a black and silver job). I went in and reversed trap so the metallic is now trapping to the black.

What do you guys think?
