I have been a downloading fool for the past few weeks. Gnubler turned me on to a website with free dowloadable clipart and the likes, but I turned her on to this place...
www.heroturko.com
If you need clipart, or royalty free images, and A LOT more cool shit, get a name and password and let the downloading begin!
I just cleared to 40 GB mark this morning. I don't know how much longer this place could possibly remain open, so GET TO IT!
Okay Desingers... you can thank me now or later, but YOU will thank me!

A small price to pay my friend. It's really not that bad. Like I said, I have been downloading for 2 or 3 weeks straight everyday. My IT guy has been shitting his pants!

Yeah - good stuff on there, but what a fuck trying to download some of them. I've been digging through it for the past two hours.

It's not free. I'm still looking - or else I'll forget it and just extract them on my Mac at home.
Gnub-
just grab WinRAR - www.rarlab.com
Direct link: http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar380.exe
Its still not freeware, theres a nag screen, but it works 100% for free and it works well.
Kthanks, trying it out now. Time to download more vector goodness.
EDIT: WinRAR says it's only good for 40 days. Guess I'll use it while I can.
EDIT 2: One of the download sites just crashed my Firefox for the second time, both times some Russian or Cyrillic language site. Slower than crap to download. What's your secret, DCS?

Keep to the RapidShare and DepositFiles. FileFactory works most of the time. I get pretty good DL speeds, 150-300 KB per second, so i'm happy. Sometimes files go corrupt, so watch out for that, but it's pretty rare. I do download photos, but the vector art and brushes are by far my choice. I am a collector of clipart, fonts, royalty free images. I am no Desinger, but I love when someone asks, "Hey you got a JimLee BoldItalic font, or a photo of a circa 1960s telephone, or a piece of Unicorn clipart?" I just say, yep. I have amassed a collection of digital treasures that would choke a donkey.

I was disappointed that the Rat Fink GFX link was broken, but there are a few more buried in there.
The funny thing is, we have this designer that does a lot of work for the city. I easily recognized several backgrounds/gfx from her work posted up there. Not to say shes getting them there, but its dissapointing as i thought it was all original work..

Before dowloading, the files should indicate a password. It will be right below the link to DL. If you have a history, go back and find the password. If not, do a search. No reason to chuck them... but they are passworded.
K, thanks. I'll check from now on. I never noticed any sort of password near the link.

So far, many of the passwords are: www.heroturko.com
If reading ain't your thing, you could always use that one. I find, before I download, I copy and paste the PWs in a text file for future use. That's just me though.
We are downloading fools. Though I'm steering away from the huge image packs over 200Mb - it's just too big to bother with. I think the biggest file I've downloaded was around 48Mb and it took quite a while. Can only do one d/l at a time at each download site.

Yes, that is true. The multiple file DLs are the most irritating, only because one part ends up going corrupt, then I have to re-DL it. A small price to pay. I have so much shit, I can't even begin to find a starting point to sort.
I've been sorting as I go, but my vector collection is growing. Never more than 2 d/l going at the same time here.
So how long will this site last, I wonder.
Get it while you can is what I would suggest. It's just too good to be true, but it is.

Yes, I was downloading with it on Windows XP - no problems, but we run AVG anti-virus software. The only thing that bothered me, despite running the latest Firefox with Adblocker, was the occasional window full of PRON that appeared under my active window. Not cool. This is probably something better done at home.

You're so nice to help PB out like that. I'm sure he'll appreciate it a bunch.

The only TRUSTED host sites from there I use are: Rapidshare, DepositFiles and occasionally FileFactory. There's nothing WRONG with the others, but I just don't like them.
They all give you limited downloads, so the idea is that you get ONE part of your document and want the rest immediately, so you need to subscribe or wait a while. If you're patient (and cheap like me), just collect one part of the file every hour or so and you'll eventually get it all.

Alright. I'm at home, drinking my wine, playing on the site. I am trying to find specific images for an ad that I am going to do for a customer. (Yeah, yeah, yeah... I'm playing at being a "deziner" again.) So...
1. How can I do a fracking search that will find me what I want??? (Go ahead and tell me how I'm killing question marks now, Youston.)
2. And of course then I need to make sure they are the free ones.
PS... My license plate on the Tahoe? DEZINER
The search engine blows. If you do a search, keep it one word and simple. After you have found nothing as a result... you'll do what I do... spend the next 10 or so hours going over every single page.
When I last needed some clipart, I found elements there, but ended up drawing most of it myself. The site has a wide range of art and photos, but it is sporadically strewn about... you just have to find it. I have a pretty extensive library, what are you looking for specifically?
1950's, Elvis-ish. They are having an Elvis birthday bash. I am thinking an old '50's style guitar.

I think most of us are. It's the backbone of prepress.
BTW, pulling a Hector here and getting on topic - I tend to avoid searching on Heroturko. There's some monster-sized downloads there. Mostly I've been browsing through the vector pages and downloading things I like under 10-15Mb. Anything bigger frightens me.
Putting an entire CD of stock images into one download is just too much. I wish they'd break it up a bit.
See? THAT'S what I mean? I'll see a stock image group and think "THAT has some cool stuff in it that I'm gonna want!!!!" But of course I'll have to grab the whole thing to find them.

I'm messin' with you man. Seriously though, the poor bastard died pinching one off on the can... he's alright in my book.
I did some searching online and according to what I found, he did play guitar but may have faked it on occasion, just for show. Elvis was a great singer and apparently pretty good on the piano from what I've read but any of the cool guitar you hear on his recordings was probably played by Scotty Moore, not Elvis.

Grab them now before they go bye-bye!
Excuse my paranoia, but is there ANY way for website "templates" to be found/checked online, and would the creators of that software/template ask the host of the website about "their" unlicensed software being used???
I'm sure it's my paranoia, but would like to hear someone say it DOESN'T happen.
Quote from: Chelle on December 17, 2008, 08:50:12 PM1950's, Elvis-ish. They are having an Elvis birthday bash. I am thinking an old '50's style guitar.
And dammit! The Rapid Share site just shut me down...
Chelle - did you do a Google image search and filter it down to only the "very large images"? When I did it I got a VERY nice Elvis guitar picture, link is here (http://www.elvis.com/news/images/Image/D28MEP-FullCover.jpg), it's worth a look just say WOW at the nice photography combined with photoshop work!
Nice! Thanks, Fooz! I love you guys! Of course it could be the wine talking.
No problem! A Google image search search with image set to "large" or "very large" can get you almost ANYTHING you need as long as you're not too fussy!
Grab stuff while you can...Heroturko appears to be changing, as of today it has a whole new look and I see the word "payment" on the homepage.
False alarm. It was Friday they changed it. Still downloading my ass off. I believe all the changes to be cosmetic ONLY!
I see a "Donate to prop up" the site button, but that's it...
Last week my computer detected a virus in the one of the website templates I downloaded (a collection of Joomla templates, in case anyone else has been downloading them). I just trashed the entire folder and won't be downloading website templates anymore, only artwork.
jumping jesus on a pogo stick, i can't believe i didn't see this until now. i'll be spending me free time downloading like a junkie now.

I had snagged some of the templates but hadn't tried them yet. Into the trash they go. Thanks for the heads up.
FRESH today - I like this one:

And it's a measley 7.5mb of EPS files!

I'm back on Heroturko again. I was drawn to it like a pressman to a 6-pack of Schlitz, except I'm looking for some kickass website templates - not a cheap buzz. Three pages queued up for Rapidshare now...these download services suck, but for free I'll do anything!
I had to quit... it was making me insane. I need to wait a few hours and let some posts accumulate. I love that place.
I quit for a while, too. Same reason. Now I have five pages lined up - I must stop. I also must run a virus scan on the templates because one of them was flagged infected last time I visited.

Gnub, my collection is so massive, I need my IT guy to get another server in here just to move it. I'm into the hundreds of GBs now... I am so addicted to it, it's like data heroin! I DL shit I will never even use... Gnub might need that, or PB might like this... I am so freakin' gone, I might as well say... My name is DCS... and I have a problem...
I don't bother with the big downloads - stock images and PSDs. Too big. But their vector selection is the shit! And most under 20Mb.

Yeah, appreciated Big D. I was just starting to get bored with Turko, now you gotta post this!?! Hahahahahahaha, I'm setting up the rig.
MediaFire is my friend! No waiting, fast downloads.
Many of the files I've tried d/l today have been removed for copyright violations. Grab them while you can!

Gotta keep up Looch, I miss ONE day there, and I am back-logged. I am still sorting as I go, but I have a SHITLOAD of stuff that I have not had time to even look at. It's gonna be Christmas morning when I finally get around to it.
This weekend - EASTER - my time to clean up that new 1gig drive - full of my photos, NFL photos, projects, and the ominous, ever expanding Heroturko folder ... :undecided:

good luck with that. I have a 750MB external at home i use to dump all the personal photos and docs on..
it started acting buggy a few months ago, thought i would archive to DVD just to be safe... 60 DVDs later... still going at it. what a pain in the ass. i should just fork over for a new hard drive, but im cheap.

wouldn't 750 MB fit on one 4.4 Gig DVD????
color me lost (not that me being lost is all that unusual).
er... im meant 750GB. its early! I remember buying that a year ago thinking id NEVER fill it up..
I would think the same thing!!
Damn that's a lot of stuff.
Does it mean I'm getting old that I wrote "1gig" when I really meant 1terabyte, and didn't think anything of it until now??
Gosh dang, dem compooter drives, an dere hexa-mega-giga-watzits hard drives...
I also have the unending task of organizing and resaving all my Heroturko goodies with previews so I can browse through them in File Browser. It's a sickness.
yeah, with TB storage being somewhat affordable now, theres no reason to delete anything anymore. its a curse and a blessing.
We've had one of our network volumes on an older puter going bad with age, so decided to move everything over to a new drive. They wanted to weed out useless/ old crap while they were at it and the gal put in charge of the project has been at it for over a week now!! She is just way too into it and driving everyone nutz with "is this okay to delete". I know mw- I would just thash everything over 2 years old!!

Tonight and last night, I expanded most of the Heroturko stuff ... Freakin wow ... I think its about 80gig of stuff - If it weren't FREE I'd DEFINITELY complain about having to sort through and categorise all of it! :banghead:
Hours upon hours of crap sorting and I have ONE piece of advice - if you have a second (CRAP) computer, disconnect it from the internet USE/ABUSE IT to expand most of the programs that have serial number cracks in them!
Most code cracks show up as VIRUSES according to your virus protection and are immediately quarantined! This way you can install the program, launch the .exe for the numbers and then delete! ;)
Fooz... last week I hit 565 GB. I have maybe half sorted. It is mind blowing.
It's all from Turko. Their book section has some real gems. I didn't know Adolf Hitler was such a kick-ass artist. Not too good in the people department, but the fucker could draw and paint his ass off! What a waste.
Yeah, I took notice of a lot of the "digital art" that was there, waiting for the right time to show the wife the collection of artwork of celebrities I have.
And I'm not a big a fan of paintings, but the Masters type stuff (Van Gogh), was too good to ignore! ;)

i do all that crap in a virtual machine, just for that reason..
dont you love it when youve been using a certain application/crack for years, then one day, after a virus definition update, you find that app infected? then you think, how long have i been a zombie/keylogged/etc?
I forgot I bookmarked this Heroturko site and started downloading stuff today. I'm looking for a vector waving American flag. I've found a few that I tried to "vectorize" in Illustrator, but the original images I find are too low res, the stars come out like 60s hippy flowers. If anyone has one, can you post please?

OK - need a little help: Since logging into Hero Turko would give my internet person fits  I am looking for some images for a project. It's a wedding invite that has a horse theme. Wow. Imagine that. They have a "horsey" project to me.
Anyhoo... The sample the girl brought in has 2 horses in silhouette running and there is a pine tree in the background. It's sort of misty/foggy. I'm not saying it has to be EXACTLY the same - but something along that line would be nice, I imagine.
I'll wander off to be the Catalog Queen for now and wander back later. Thanks in advance.
So you need a misty foggy background, 2 horses running silhouettes and a pine tree silhouette? Would you like fries with that?

Yes - I'd LOVE fries, DCS. Thanks for asking! I said that would be the IDEAL but I'll take what I can get.
Beer! THAT SOUNDS PERFECT!
Okay, so IF I can get the horses and the tree, what kind of misty BG do you want? Be specific, I got a million.

The one she provided has fog and seems to be just ENOUGH of a fog that you can see the shape of the tree but no details. Is that specific enough? You can see other trees vaguely in the back ground but only the one tree really well. Hang on - this is a sample that has a website on it. Let me see if I can actually FIND the damn photo for you to see...
That would be ideal.
OK - THIS is the sample that she brought in...

Next time you are hanging with friends, preferably drunk (you got 9 months before you can try it drunk) bet someone they can't eat six saltines in one minute, nothing to drink.
They bet me at our Xmas party, you wind up with a mouth full of sawdust I started laughing and shot cracker dust all over the table...ahh good times.
Bullshit, I have done it. It is hard, but not impossible. I can't do 7, but I can do 6.

I must warn you... it isn't pretty. Hold it in, don't spit! Swallow hard and create a pocket in the side of your mouth to collect saliva... add a little to the paste ever so often, chewing and swallowing a little at a time!

True, but I wasn't the pot-head I am now, back then. That took years of conditioning.

99% of the d/l links are now on Hotfile so I have to wait in between downloads. Seems like there used to be 2-3 d/l links provided. What happened to Rapidshare?
Sucks that everything is Hotfile only. All that time spent DLing that stuff and it got burnt. Now I have to wait a half hour in between DLs. I hate when they give you something awesome, and then take it away. It was bound to happen. I'm surprised there is still a "free" option.
I know. I was busy "archiving files" last week. Once in a while you'll get an alternate d/l link but it's almost all Hotfile.

I'm looking for a good quality image near 11.75" x 36" vertical. I have a frame here at work I need to use and it has to be vertical for our show room. It's a black frame. Anyone have anything cool I can print for it? The only limitation is no nudes or anything seductive. And really, that's all I can find.

Hey, Skyrber? What kind of images are you looking for? I mean, content-wise?
Something colorful. Or maybe nature, animals......nothing dark. She has a windmill lit up at night in there right now and although it's a cool image, it's boring and has no color. I was looking for parrots and tree frogs and although I found some good ones, they aren't anything I can use in that size. I may have to make a collage or something. I just can't use anything that may be offensive to people.
I have a few. All at home, however. I will dig you up something KICK ASS.
How about a beautiful, colorful Pantone Chart? Kidding, kidding.

Awesome! I'm downloading every chance I get. I've been emailing myself HotFile links everyday and when I get home, every hour I DL them. I have a project to create sample banners so people can come in and look through a book for Birthdays, Anniversaries, Holidays, etc. I have to get my collection back up.

There are a lot of them. I don't even post them anymore. 1 place can potentially take you 10 more places. I find a lot are redundant.
There's a lot of redundancy. Most of it ends up on Vecteezy and Turko. I get excited when I reach a real desinger's personal site and see art he/she created that I've already seen on 10 other sites.
I get excited when I see something I haven't seen 10 times on 10 different sites, every other post.

Lots of "copyright removals" on Lord of Design links, just like Heroturko. It's getting worse, but I don't blame the original artists finding their work on sites like this.

Quote from: Farabomb on March 04, 2011, 10:35:59 AMAnybody have a simple halftone dot vector? Went looking but didn't find much.
you can create a simple halftone effect in illustrator - (Effect > pixelate > color halftone) - apply that to a greyscale gradient, then adjust the radius / document raster effects settings to get the effect you like. Not vector, but usable.

http://idesignvectors.com/ (http://idesignvectors.com/)
I've plundered just about all of them. I have about a month and a half of sorting to go through.
I haven't plundered for a few weeks now. The sickness comes and goes. It took me that long just to sort thru the stuff I had plundered during previous weeks.
I set up links at work, then mass DL them at home. The last couple sites, I start form page 1 and go all the way through. Some of these sites have 800 pages or so to go through for vector and raster EACH. I pick what I think I'll need for later, and move on.
You are a sick man.
It is a sickness, yes. In turn, I have a library that continually grows, and someday soon, I will run out of storage space. When that day comes... gun in mouth. My life is complete.

I think there is a 12 step program for that.
i dont think ill ever review the gigs of crap i downloaded. i occasionally will have a need for something i grabbed, but its usually packed away in some file called asds0d89u3343.zip - like thats going to help...
much like a "digital hoarder", just having it makes me feel secure -
much like grabbing the whole catalog of a band when you only like one song.. then when it all comes up on random shuffle, im like WTF is this?
I gave up on renaming files. I keep them organized with relevant folder names, but it's still kind of a mess.
most of that crap is dumped in a very loosely organized folder system, then i just browse through the crap with bridge. I do have a 1TB portable HDD i keep it all on.. never seems to be with me when i need it.
I actually go through EVERY graphic and rename them. It really depends on if the files can be set within a group. Like "Women_Raster" Within that folder are hundreds of sub-folders all containing different renditions of women in raster format. I have to keep them organized, I actually use them for the mag.
After I hit about 3,000 vectors I got tired of renaming. I run all the vectors thru distiller and make them PDFs so they all preview in Bridge now.
Yuck! Bridge? I use iView, or whatever it's called today. Bridge sucks ass for stuff like this.
Yuck?
What's going on here? :toaster:

That was my thought. I "like" them and immediately delete my like after I get the link.
What if I don't like them but just want the free stuff anyway?
If you want to download anything off GFXtra (or any of those clone sites) that is multipart, download the last part first. Bastids are starting to make the last part file for premium users only with Extabit. At least if you know that first you can move on...... :tantrum2:
Sneaky bastards!
Random question, because this is where I like to come with that stuff,
Did/does HeroTurku have any decent "image montage/mosiac" software/programs...?
My wife has HUNDREDS of pictures of our cat, and I have a spare day coming up...
...because the world needs more cat pics.

There are some online ones, from a quick Googlin' of "image mosaic generator"

One more, standalone app on the Mac, although I get the feeling you want something unencumbered by silly "fees" but worth a look:

I found those too. Not the one I'm looking for.
I went through all of my old and trusted sources and that's the best I could come up with. I even checked the sites I have bookmarked in Russia.
Me too! I can't believe it's so hard to find. I'm going to end up tracing it.
Maybe if they ever become a "Winning" team, site will take the time to collect their logos.

When you do, upload it to brandsoftheworld.com so the next poor bastard doesn't suffer your fate.
What are you using it for? Because if it's a retrospective on the last time they won the World Series, I don't think 1914 is old enough.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in this Topic, but many times Wikipedia has decent vector logos associated with a topic's page. Typically they're an SVG but a quick re-save in Illy & Bob's yer uncle!
Of course, the one you're after isn't listed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Cubs) but I bet you could submit it when done too and it would be readily available for all of eternity.
Was this one posted yet? Lots of sports team logos and other shite.

Freehand job
Joe, I'm not at work today so it would have to wait until monday. I work for a reprographic blueprinting company. What specifically did you need? What's it for?
It's for a header for a construction/remodeling company website. They want the blue paper with some kind of housing construction/remodeling blueprint drawing on it. I need to to be vector so I can make a .svg of it from Illustrator. It can't have any rasterized data in it or it defeats the purpose of using a .svg on the website. No rush either. I'm sure they will have about eleventy billion changes before Monday anyway. :sarcasm:

Mine have gotten plenty of rain water the last two days. But it won't be long until I don't see rain for 4 months...or more.
Try 11 months with one light sprinkle. I continue to wonder why humans live here.
Last summer was bad here. We went from May to October with almost zero rain (plus 100 degree temps for most of that time). And this isn't a desert.
I hear you. I think it's called "global warming". Farms here are drying out, there is not enough river water to disperse. We have water rights here and I only flood once a week but after 3 days shit is dry.
