I tried JollysFastVNC trial a few years back, I just wasn't compelled enough at the time to plunk down $30 to "get your jollys" (not that there's anything wrong with that).

On the iPhone I've used iTeleport for years and it works very nicely as well, I did buy that one because it worked MUCH better than any of the others I tried.

Joe, actually you can use Screen Sharing on Mac to connect with PC, it's just another VNC client like all the rest. It can be finicky depending on which flavor VNC server your running.

Farabomb, Teamviewer is ridiculously expensive, hard to get your head around at first, once you do, it's a dream to use and far superior to it's competitors (I've used them all). I use the free version, make sure to pick NOT BUSINESS or it's goes into 30 day demo, records your NIC's mac address, and when it times out you can never get even the free version to work again. I have it running on: home machines, work machine, management's home machines, relative's machines. You can save bookmarks in folders and it works flawlessly on my iPhone too. When I sign into my account from anyone else's machines I can see all of the bookmarks.

RDP (Mac or PC) is the most responsive, faster than VNC or TeamViewer, but it whacks your icons if screens are different resolutions, and if you're trying to help someone it blanks the screen.

Mac to PC use free RealVNC client, connect and top of window let's you save bookmarks

Mac to Mac use Screen Sharing, in Safari type (but don't enter) vnc://ip.ad.dr.es then drag this bookmark to save

PC to Mac I have used TightVNC, RealVNC, UltraVNC, newer Mac OS broke these, I probably just need to update my PC VNC clients

PC to PC use TightVNC connect and top of window let's you save bookmarks

UltraVNC has poor instructions and mirror drivers can be pain to work with on PC, it does work well but I prefer TightVNC

RealVNC is a pain now because they switched the free version where you get 3 licenses for server, client is still unrestricted, these guys are the inventors of VNC.

Chicken won't let you save bookmarks

What you really are wanting is a VPN at work. When you connect to it from home, your home machine joins the local network at work and you could securely hop from machine to machine in a singular fashion. I used to use iVPN software on an old G3 and it worked great. If your work has something like a Sophos UTM then it will have a VPN already inside and just needs to be turned on.

Hope this helps.

I concur with Joe about EasyFind. It smokes Spotlight.

I used to use a utility to fix Spotlight called "Spotless" but it hasn't been updated to work with anything higher than 10.7

The technical reason for why Spotlight stops working is that it gets tangled up in it's own underwear, for fixing your Spotlight issues... here's the easy way

Quote from: Nick Burns on October 07, 2014, 02:19:14 PMThanks mwc, looks good on pricing until I saw the per user fees.

FYI-The per user fees (clients) are for concurrent connections. You can have as MANY people as you want as users, just x of x can login at the same time (we have 40+ users, and 14 sessions and works fine (for us.)

Good to know, that is how PressWise treats "user" also, I will revisit printpoint for a more indepth look...

Hmmm... still too pricey for what we want to spend but thanks!

What's up with the truncated name Earendil, have you just gotten so lazy that you can't go by your proper name anymore when addressing your Dark Lord?

David, no I'm sorry I wasn't aware you worked for the Q, I applied there for a job that I was insanely overqualified for, something like a "Color CSR" to communicate color wishes between the client and the pressman (damnit, I take the disk from the customer to the engineer, no wait, that's another story). I only made it to the initial phone interview, but they didn't like my answer about whether I preferred to work on projects as a team member or an individual. The girl kept coaching me that what I meant to say was an individual "member of a team". Never got a call back. I was so looking forward to having someone with a stopwatch time my pee runs.

I am pushing for PressWise in our shop right now and am just trying to gather any additional info good or bad on the various systems. So, sorry Ear, no Blood Moon just yet.

Thanks David. Your shop must have DEEP pockets. Helpful to know you are satisfied with it.

Apologies if I'm not posting this in the right section, please move if need be.
Could everyone please tell me which MIS system your shop uses and whether or not you are satisfied with it?

I'm looking for honest answers from the trenches.

Avanti? Accura? Monarch? Presidio? PressWise? PrintSmith?

Thanks!

This is time limited but you can get 89 fonts out of the deal with commercial use license. All free. I've pulled several paid apps off this site for nothing over the last year...

Not sure where to post this time sensitive stuff so I thought I would just trample Joe's thread since I know he's a font whore.

I know this is an ancient thread, but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about this software. We're switching platesetters and our front end vendor wanted $10,000 to turn on CIP output. We also had the option of having our platesetter vendor turn it on on their side for $10,000. Excourse PressPerCent gives you way more functionality than any of the others and here's the kicker, it costs a whopping $245! I played with the demo yesterday, emailed them with questions today, and had responses and answers within minutes. I just bought it and it is awesome. You get universal binaries that will run on PowerPC or Intel, Tiger through Lion!

The demo is fully working except for it won't let you customize plate sizes until you purchase.

Quote from: hotmetal on February 28, 2012, 02:30:24 PMThanks, Nick!

I got serial numbers for and downloaded the 3 biggies you first pointed us to and then got the FBX plugin and the Texture Atlas plus the docs for both.

Back in... ahem... The Day... 1991 or so, when I had one of the last typeshops in town shot out from under me, I was in a partnership with a designer. I flowed a lot of text into layouts for her and made all the charts and diagrams and illustrations, for a whole bunch of high-end clients.

One day, Ray Dream, an expensive early 3D app, offered itself for a mere $199, so I bought it, not knowing squat about 3D wireframes and texture mapping. It ran so slow on my IIci I got frustrated, but they threw in a little program (can't remember the name) that let you import Illustrator eps files and extrude and rotate the Illustrator object. Stuff that's been in Illustrator for years, but wasn't in it at the time. I got my $199 worth out of that app making 3D pie charts and extruded bargraphs and stuff. Once you'd processed the object you could bring it back into Illustrator and do whatever you wanted with it. That little program plus the early Adobe Streamline paid my rent for a number of years. Back in The Day.

At some point, Ray Dream released a limited edition for the Mac for $99, but by then I had moved on to Prepress and didn't much care.

So,  now we'll see what Bryce is all about, eh? In my copious free time. Thanks again, Nick!

Hope you enjoy, now you got me racking my brain trying to think of what that program was, I've still got all of those programs on my PowerMac 8500 at home. I played with all of them but unfortunately wasn't as enterprising with them as you, they never paid me for anything.
