Kodak Preps / Re: Generating JDF for MBO folder
October 27, 2022, 12:21:08 PM
At this point in time, I am able to load all of the information manually at the (MBO) DataManager and it seems to be operational.  I think finding a solution to the JDF file is going to require some more work and I am pretty much fed up with this whole process.  For the moment we can at least keep track of the work being done on the folder through reports that can be generated.
Thanks for the helps guys.

I am still figuring this one out a little at a time.  Kodaks response was to steer me towards their "Business Link" feature (of course more $$)
Germany steers me towards a Middleware called Lynx by Tessitura

Does anyone have experience with either of these?  I don't want to have to tell the boss that we have to spend more money to get the already expensive folder to properly work. :vomit:

Kodak Preps / Re: Generating JDF for MBO folder

The whole process seems to hinge on us having some kind of Management Information System that feeds information as a JDF to the management system for the MBO folder.  All we have is a job tracking system (circa late 20th century) which is not going to work at all.  I thought we could create something out of preps, but it only seems to error at the MBO.  We also cannot generate any good Data Matrix codes for the camera reader on the folder because of this lack of MIS.  Kodak support only showed us how to generate a Data Matrix code by using the Custom Fields Manager in workshop. It can't be read.

Kodak Preps / Generating JDF for MBO folder
July 20, 2022, 08:04:30 AM
I am guessing this is likely where I should post this information.

My Company just bought a new MBO folder for our bindery.  The guys from Germany are here helping get things all set up and fine tuned.  One thing they need is a JDF file to add to their front end hot folder which should contain all of the folding information for the job.  Our workflow is Prinergy 8.3 which is integrated with Preps 8.3.  The only place I encounter JDF is with Preps, so I am guessing that is where I get the information they are looking for. We tried just adding the JDF file that shows up in the System/Imposition plans/Preps folder to try, but it had no folding information.
So I went to Preps preferences and on the Output tab I needed to check on Include JDF folding Data.  This seemed to change the makeup of the JDF file to include this information.  I was wondering about the "Include HTML file with JDF output for WST equipment setup" - Is this where I can make a file that is put to the hot folder destination on the MBO front end? If so, I think all I need is a share created.

I just want to know if I am on the right track before I start testing.

Not looking forward to uninstalling, does anyone think the fix will come soon?

Tracy,

I can send you a link for an unaffected version. No need to uninstall or install anything. Just rename the app that isn't working and copy the one from my link. Download, unzip, and move in the Acrobat folder in the Applications folder. I will send the link via PM to you.

Joe, Can you send a link to me too? Thanks

I just tried on our Prinergy with the original file and it didn't work either, but I also tried with Kodak TrapEditor and got this message. If it helps.
"1 complex bitmaps were ignored during processing. To select and trap these bitmaps you may retrap the page with the 'Trap All' image bitmap option."
Which still did not work.

Same here. As usual Kodak's error messages are useless. The message should have read "1 bitmap mask was ignored during processing. To trap these bitmap masks you may retrap the page with a different workflow." :rotf:

I really would like to hack the system and hard code that into the messages.   ;) Kodak should find a way around this rather than forcing the operator to decipher what the actual issue is.  Good thing I have made a habit of always thinking outside the box....It's great for job security.

Xitron Navigator

Figures!  When we did our workflow upgrade it came down between Kodak and Xitron.  Obviously Prinergy won, but I did really like a lot of what Xitron had to offer too.  I think it really boiled down to the fact that we already had a plate contract with Kodak so it may have offered a few more freebies along the way to entice the decision that way.

...And Joe, Thanks for taking a look at this and at least confirming my issue.

Okay so I figured it out.  I converted the "Bitmap" (which for some reason when exported from Indesign turns it into an image mask) into a grayscale image, then loaded the image as a selection, pasted into a new channel, converted to a monotone of 7455, then saved as a PSD file. When exported from Indesign, it now is at least considered an image.  As a bonus, Prinergy trapped it.  YAY!!!

I see that too.  Maybe I have to look at the save settings from photoshop?

Kodak Systems / Complex traps?

I seem to be missing something when it comes to trapping bitmaps.  I have a file that is a 1200 dpi bitmap that is colored Pantone 7455 which is placed on top of a Pantone 128 solid fill.  For some reason it considers the bitmap to be a complex bitmap (whatever) and ignores it.  I have even told used trap editor to tell it to trap all, but it still won't trap it.  What am I missing?  My old antiquated system prior to switching to Prinergy could do it, but not this "state of the art" system.

Got it fixed! Turns out when when we updated to Prinergy 8.3, someone also updated Windows which just happened to be the one update on the list of problem updates for MACs using SMB. Uninstalled the update and all is well again.  Thanks for all of your help on this one. :yourock:

Thanks fellas!  I will give this a try and see how it goes.

I am a bit of a novice when it comes to the mac, I spend more time on a PC.  I am not familiar with a host file on the mac.  Where would I locate that?
Workshop will open, but as soon as I try to do anything in it, it wants to connect to the server, which will not allow me to mount.  All I see is the server showing up in the list of servers on the network, but when I try to connect, it asks for credential which I supply as an Administrator.  I believe it says "There was a problem connecting to server..."  I am not really sure what it is looking for.
