Random Technology / Wyze and Google Nest Home
September 07, 2023, 01:14:55 PM
There's a cross promotion going on right now between Wyze and Google Nest Home. (There's also this). You can get a 7" Google Home smartscreen and an indoor/outdoor video surveilance camera for $79.99 (50% off). Google Home integrates with ADT and if you have Wyze it does that (and Arlo). I dropped Xfinity ($165/mo for 2gb cable internet, home phone and alarm/monitoring) to get Fidium ($69.99/mo for home phone and 2gb fibre-optic internet but no alarm) and I have 5 Arlo cams and 4 Wyze cams and Google Home monitors it all. I have Arlo cloud recording and Wyze SD recording and I programmed Home, Away and Night time modes with push alerts. If I'm Away from Home and something trips a camera, I get video immediately (and recorded) and I can 1-touch activate an alarm/call for help.

I also have a Ring doorbell and motion floodlight, but Google Home doesn't integrate with Ring.
Adobe Illustrator / Illustrator CS 5
March 03, 2022, 10:33:03 PM
I am using CS 5.1 at home; it's all I got anymore that works. I can't remember how to set file preferences so that it goes to the most recently browsed folder. I have 74 signature tif scans I need to place on to vector art for a T-shirt, and it sucks.
Macintosh / 21.5" mid-2011 iMac upgrade
October 27, 2021, 11:01:06 PM
I have 8gb RAM... just for fucking around with at home. Should I spend a few bucks and upgrade it to 16gb RAM?
Windows / Windows 10 hanging
February 07, 2021, 02:08:25 AM
I have an issue at home on one of my Windows 10 machines. This one happens to be an AMD Phenom 8450 Triple-Core 2.10Ghz with 8gb RAM 64-bit. It appears, so far, that it ONLY hangs on internet and NOT on games or other apps. I have Google Chrome AND MS Edge, and it appears to hang more on Chrome and less on Edge, but does hang on both. By *hang,* I mean it just totally locks up and stops functioning for several minutes, usually resulting in a 2nd window stating, "Page Unresponsive." I've pretty much attempted every internet fix short of doing a Win10 reset. It happened just now typing this message for 3-4 minutes

During the *hang,* for lack of a better term, I can still access other Windows 10 functions... if Chrome hangs, I can still browse on Edge, and vice-versa. I can still play music, or games, or access features like the calculator, etc. It's super annoying, and I'd like to fix it without resorting to the reset. I've run Malwarebyters, Windows Defender, Stinger, etc. and come up blank. I did do an Event Viewer and found a recurring problematic event, schannel error 36871, but it also does hang in the Event Viewer. I have taken every step imaginable to eliminate this issue, including Registry level adjustments, and for 48 hours there have been no schannel errors, but it still hangs.

It *may* be an MS Windows security 5379 error, but event viewer doesn't show this as a catastrophic error. Any ideas?
Adobe InDesign / Reinstalling CS4
June 30, 2020, 02:23:37 PM
I know that everything Adobe CS5.5 and prior, the activation servers are no longer running. I reset my home workstation and lost my CS at home. I am reinstalling CS4, but it won't accept my CS3 serial number. Any ideas on how to get it installed?
The Rest... / OpenDocument Google Graphic files
April 23, 2020, 03:24:38 PM
Holy schniekes... just got my first job supplied entirely as .odg files

It's some kind of google vector art. Has anybody worked with these before, and can tell me what kind of pitfalls am I falling in to?
Random Technology / 5g Phones
April 15, 2020, 04:00:36 PM
I've had my current phone for 3 or 4 years now. I forget. It's a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, and it was alright. I had an iPhone 3 over a decade ago, and then 3 Samsungs in a row, but this one is on it's last legs and I'm thinking I'm ready to buy a new one. What would you go with and why? I'm leaning towards the iPhone 11 Pro 256gb but would consider another Galaxy Edge or perhaps the Pixel. I like a lot of things about the Android line, but I think I'm ready to just enjoy a phone that just always works instead of the tireless tinkering I seem to always be doing with my Androids.
Digital Printing / Xerox driver issue
March 19, 2020, 11:16:59 AM
I had a hiccup over here and my ColorPress driver got deleted. Obviously, I still have it, but now it goes direct to print instead of going to the hold queue. I can't remember how I set it up originally... help!!
Macintosh / Catalina
March 16, 2020, 01:34:41 PM
I've had a steady stream of work today, but I can't imagine that will continue for long. Has anyone updated to Catalina yet? We don't have RIP or Impo software to deal with; just Suitcase and CC2020. I'm fairly certain those will play nice, but does Catalina screw anything else up? It won't mess up fonts (any more than usual) or network stuff does it? I assume I'll have to upgrade from Mojave at some point, but is now a good time?
Adobe InDesign / CC 2020 update
March 09, 2020, 09:59:39 AM
My machine updated CC2020 over the weekend, and now I can't close out of anything. All the CC apps seem to have the red X disabled now. but Command-Q also doesn't work. I now have to go to File-->Quit to close it out. I'm gonna reboot my computer and see if that helps. The f***ing CC update screen is also stuck open - I can't get rid of it no matter what I do.
Adobe InDesign / Mail Merge field script creation
January 27, 2020, 11:50:34 AM
I have done this in FusionPro with scripts and if/and/then statements but have never done in InDesign. Is there a way through mail merge to author a statement to change the field name? To elaborate, I have a spreadsheet and some names say Telephone, some say Cell and some say Direct. Some people have 2 phones. Some 3. Some 1. If I write the field name in the text box, it will always be there, so other than create a new field in the spreadsheet for each descriptor, I don't know if there's a way.
Adobe Illustrator / PageMaker file

Can anyone here convert a PageMaker file to InDesign for me?
Fonts / Google Fonts
November 14, 2019, 02:45:29 PM
Anyone else using this? It's pretty neat. I just needed two obscure fonts, and found them both in Google Fonts and downloaded the entire collection legally and free of charge. Noice!

The Rest... / Fonts in a PowerPoint file
November 14, 2019, 11:40:43 AM
Is it possible to tell what the font is supposed to be in a Power Point file? I got one to produce as a sign job for our sign shop, and it previews in Mac OS as a serif'd font, but Zamzar converts it to Courier (technically serif'd, but the preview looks more like Times), and when I open it in PowerPoint it changes to Verdana. I have no screenshot and no printout or pdf to compare to.
Lately, when I open a pdf, the print screen pops up. It's a minor annoyance, but I can't find the preference to turn off this option.

Also, before a new file opens, it shows the last opened file until the new one finishes opening up. Again, annoying.

HELP! :gom:
Which would you prefer as a production machine:

choice a) iMac 27" 16GB RAM 2.66 i5 Late 2009

choice b) refurb Trash Can Mac of unknown specs

getting a brand new cheese grater in NOT an option
Digital Printing / CWS paper profiles
October 03, 2019, 11:12:22 AM
This new shop, where I am now entrenched "permanently," has an EX1000 Fiery 10 running a Xerox 1000 color digital press. Creating a new paper profile, and then calibrating it and creating an alignment profile is easy.... but getting CWS to recognize that new paper? It just doesn't. How to do this, plz?
Windows / Windows 10 as a workstation
October 01, 2019, 11:15:52 AM
For the time being, I have no choice but to struggle through the day using Windows 10, and it is frustrating to say the least. Someday I'll get a Mac again, but for now it is what it is. Is there a way to force Windows 10 to display previews of AI and PS images? I have tried a few third-party options, but they don't do what I need them to do. Also, is there a way to create a fixed sidebar that doesn't move around? Mine keeps reflecting open folders, etc and I have to keep scrolling back up to get where I need to be.
Does anyone have a Windows 10 driver for the Speedsetter 300 x2?

...or do you know where it is installed on an existing Windows 10 box?

Long story...
Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat Security
September 19, 2019, 01:20:51 PM
I know the traditional way to encrypt a PDF with password, restrict/low res printing, etc., but I have a twist...

Is there a way to write a PDF directly from ID/Illy/PS to encrypt it with predetermined security in 1-step? I know I can make a .ps file and drop it on the Distiller and have it encoded with security, but it's still 2 steps (make the ps and distill it). Trying to minimize the effort here...
