I fed on an old "Johannesburg" press that was converted over to diecut plastic ... steel on steel, no safety stops, had to manually raise (wind) the pile, and my fingers still get twitchy (scared) when I think about it.

It's really barely different than a Gutenberg press, all of that complication is simply to automate the inking which was done by hand, directly to the raised type prior to that.

It's like a TX two-step.
The ink roller applies to the round platen (which turns a bit each time)
The platen comes forward/down to ink the raised type
The raised type goes back/up to the substrate...
well something like that...
I saw it on Rockford Files  :))
