7.0.4. (CS5). I think it may be Font Explorer, as it's trying to hook up with Indesign (shoulda disabled it :embarrassed: ), and FEX not launching either.
Have run applejack. Can do again. Scant info from Console.
Dump Prefs? Both apps.? What's the key hold-down again David? :cheesy: (or I'll move em to desktop...)
Key combo for Indy is CTRL+SHIFT+OPTION+COMMAND and start Indy. I don't think that works with FEX though.
2330 here... just got in, but at least been out. Been the day from hell; other stuff as well. Shall try Prefs dump in the morn.
You said dump. Heheheh.
I did. But further constructive suggestions are welcome.
Frailer, did the pref dump do any good?
do you have FEX set to auto load the fonts?
Font cache cleaner, perhaps?
About to tackle, after some other 'issues' sorted...
I've dumped some fonts I had in the Indy Fonts folder. Can I dump that (dot)lst safely?

yes, it's just leftovers
Done. Here's my next move. I think Indys an innocent by-stander. I don't have auto activation on, but I think (a dodgy/corrupted) FEX is trying to talk to it when you try and launch Indy. Stupid tripwire.
About to go to FEX site and see what updates are in place. Maybe an overwrite of the current one (I'm on paid version), will fix it. The don't call me Paulyanna for nothin'.
Is it a specific file, or every file you try to open?
Just a 'cold' launch. I have a horrible feeling that it's a PICNIC problem. Been a bit slack on preventative maintenance, and thought "I know, I'll launch FEX, and run the Tools. I ran the 1st one, which I think is 'Clean System Fonts'... troubles started then, I think.
having said that, yesterday was a wrtched blur... I may be hallucinating. production getting in the way right now.
No sign of wonkiness anywhere else.
I did do a write-over of the a downloaded FEX 3.1. No dice. I'll have time to tinker this afternoon. There's always Indy on the other iMac. I consider myself overdue on such an event; so am philosophical.
Next trick is to uninstall FEX with AppCleaner. See if Indy will launch without it there. If it does, I'll re-install from the DMG.
Progress. Moved FEX Plugin onto Desktop. Indy startup successful. I wonder if I can just not worry about it. Can still activate fonts if I need to, with FEX. Plugin not a prerequisite, correct?
Shall now uninstall FEX, install downloaded one. Shall make sure plugin not loaded for Indy.
I never load those plug ins, I just don't like it loading fonts I don't want to use.
I wonder if somehow he has a missing , or corrupt system font. Hey, Cap... how are your other apps running? IS this only specific to InDesign and FEX?
Did you try Font Cache Cleaner? It works great whenever Quark hoses my fonts. It's easy, maybe worth a shot.
I read a neat trick on some forum about clearing Safari's font cache. It's almost as magical as quark.
   Oh ya, I remember that! :lmao:
Everything else running fine. Tried uninstalling FEX and installing fresh download. problem remains with FEX not launching. Having removed FEX plugin from Indy folder, Indy going OK.
I have emailed FEX support, with Crash report.
Something went wonky when I tried a Tools cleanup on the 1st menu item. Someone with a working FEX may confirm that it's 'Clean System Fonts'. :undecided: Something came unstuck then, my guess.
Shall try Font Cache Cleaner Monday. A free download?
Yep, a free download. I keep a copy on my FTP to help my clients. It's amazing the gremlins it chases off, especially when Quark is installed on a machine. Sometimes, things just don't seem to be running right, repair permissions, etc... if things are still wonky, FCC seems to straighten things out. Probably because us prepressers load and unload fonts often. I have a zipped copy... it's a little large to attach but PM your email address to me and I'll send it to you.
Have Western Union'd a PM. :cheesy:
OK ear, your FCC ran OK. (the downloaded one didn't). Reported font caches cleaned, though I thought it did it pretty quickly... :undecided:
FEX still a no-start. Awaiting feedback from Linotype support. They have the Report from the Force Quit. managing fine via Document Fonts folder, or loading temporarily into Indy's Fonts folder. double >
Thanks for the send...
My head hurts..... Had Illy open this morning to adjust and Save As some solid colour bars in XMF. Got an AI file from house dezinger, which had a missing font. WTF, FEX launches... (plugin set to launch in Illy in a 'font' situation). See screenshots. Indy is open at the time.
When done with Illy, I quit it. Quit FEX. Quit Indy Re-launch 'em. Now sitting together in the desk at back of room without pulling each others' hair out.
Seems the Illy plugin-triggered launch 'cleared' something.
Further testing to see all is still well. I'll relax after a couple o' days. Colour me confused.
It's magic.
I don't like unexplained phenomena. Close Encounters of the Linotype kind.
Am wondering if it was as stupid as a Permissions problem. :undecided:

I doubt it. I don't think letting Illy open it would have fixed a permissions issue. Maybe just dumb luck but it's better to not look a gift horse in the mouth. [/puns]
Big test tomorrow. Close all other apps., and run Tools, starting with 'Clean System Fonts' :tonofbricks:
Well, finally sent Linotype tech support request to the correct email. Seems uninstalling FEX is a bit beyond AppCleaner, cos I did the steps as replied in, unloaded FEX from the DMG, and have a fresh install, which seems to be working fine.
Suspect a PLIST file which I'd previously been unaware of. If anyone wants me to post the list/locations of files to be turfed, let me know. I'll Paste the list here.
