I would at this point really think about taking photos with the phone camera...

I thought about that too. I've done it for some legal/tax documents and it was okay. Not sure if it's any slower or faster.

Any chance of negotiating with the client to resubmit without grommets, you agree to re-apply them after scanning? You sight "materials not compatible with equipment."

I'm with @born2print ...just punch out the rivets or cut off the edge so you can use the feeder on the scanner. Maybe paper clip them back into their sets just for organization, but no need to re-apply the rivets. No one will ever open these boxes again if your scans are made well.
