I don't think .dat files are anything you really need to open.
They come from a windows email app...

and they suck and you'll never be able to open them on a mac.

I've tried, (not too hard, cause it's winblows).

I just tell 'em to resend the file to me and not forward a forward of a forward. Of course, it just magically disappears and I get no email.

This is my FAQ on this...info may be old and outdated...but so am I....

What is a Winmail.dat file? (and how do I use it?)

If you receive an attachment called "winmail.dat" - it is most likely sent from a PC platform user of MS-OUTLOOK. If settings in these programs are incorrect, they will send out attacements as this "winmail.dat" file that are only usable if you have the same email software (outlook). Having the original sender change formatting preferences to use PLAIN or HTML text will normally fix the problem...DO NOT use the RTF text option, this is what causes the problem.
If you can't get the sender to resend the files, there are a few things you can do with the following utilities:

Software to decompress, extract info from the WINMAIL.DAT file include:

[ http://www.biblet.com ]WMDecode from http://www.biblet.com   (PC app)
[ http://www.fentun.com/ ]Fentun from http://www.fentun.com/ (PC app)
[ http://www.joshjacob.com/macdev/tnef/  ]TNEF's Enough from http://www.joshjacob.com/macdev/tnef/ (Mac OSX App / OS9 in earlier versions)
[ http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/winmail_opener/ ]WinMail Opener from http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/winmail_opener/ (PC app)

I still use the delete key on 'em, waste of time trying to decompress and fix crap you don't need.
