error says in an unknown format and cannot be opened

Sometimes I get that message and a quit/restart of Illy is enough to get it open, but more often than not it requires a reboot of the Mac itself. Then everything opens as it should.

You can also try to place it into a blank Illy file and resave. That's helped me, although usually it's when trying to open a newer version than I have.

Sometimes you can get away with dropping the .eps in Distiller then opening the pdf in Illustrator. Depends on how intricate the file is and if there are any fonts included. Sometimes it works like a dream, sometimes not so much.

Nah, Illustrator just gets wrapped up in in its own underwear. Usually have to reboot. Quitting AI and relaunching doesn't usually work at all. It happens to me 2 or 3 times a week.

I made the changes in the original file this was the 2nd file on the job.

I couldn't import into indy, restart didn't do it, nothing worked

Problem is how do you tell a customer you need a new file,
without them sending you the same one?

I usually ask for an eps if the original file was an ai and vise versa
but in this case nothing worked

Still not sure what the problem was

The particular file you posted is showing 0 Kb, as in no data present.

Do a "Command-I" to bring up the info box and confirm on the file you have there.

Yeah, opened the .ai file in a text editor and it looks like this:

Your Sales-Puke... now you know why I call them that... is either lying, or never looked at it. Or, looked at the original file, like you said. I would still even question that he did. More like, not wanting to call the customer and do his/her job. They are all EXACTLY like that here.
