I found all my notes from my previous install (Thanks Joe)

I'm going to back up everything maybe next week and do Time Machine backup differently
than Im doing now before I start, going to take it real slow.
I will use Time Machine to reinstall my printers etc..

so My first question is, do we create a bootable disk still or is there a different way now?

You can upgrade right over your current OS from System Settings==>General==>Software Updates. It will keep your old apps, documents, preferences, printers and everything else. You only need to create a bootable installer if you want to do a clean install by wiping out everything and installing the new OS fresh. Since I think you did the wipe and install last time I would just install over the current OS. I would still do a full backup before you do it though...just in case.

The last install I did was my other Mac

This is for the M1, It has the OS that it came with Monterey

So installing over the top of an existing OS won't slow it down?
that would be much easier

Joe

It is free to find out. It will be done in less than hour most likely. If it seems slower you could then do the wipe and install. I doubt you will see any difference though. And again...do the full backup before doing either.

cool thanks Joe, I will prepare the disk I think before installing on top of the existing OS,
just to be ready in case of a problem.
and yes I'm so paranoid of installing OS' that My main concern is losing stuff, that will be the priority.
Thanks so much Joe. :-*

Shouldn't be an issue during the upgrade. But the full backup will prevent that from ever happening....unless the backup disk dies.

Can you use a USB Flash drive for Time machine?
you know the small ones, it's 1TB so it's enough space

Joe

I wouldn't trust it. They are slow and less reliable than a hard drive.

But if Time Machine will let you...you could.

Thanks! I knew I should ask
I am using my NAS right now, might just keep it that way or get an external drive
Thanks!

that's pretty cheap digi I will get that

DigiCorn

Doesn't have to be that exact one. That's just the one I've been getting for video games and stuff, and I've had them going on 3 years without issue.
I don't feel tardy...

Yeah, I got one for my Backups of my files.

You know I saw something new, USB with C Drive plug
so USB to C, this is interesting

I have 2 C ports in the front of my M1, USB in the back

The new 24" iMacs have either 2 or 4 USB C ports depending on the model you buy and zero regular USB ports.

looks like USB will be obsolete some day

I hate them anyway, I always go to put them in wrong
and ALWAYS have to flip them the other way.
but the cord always wants to go that way, so it's akward  ;D

USB A and USB B will die out it looks like, but C should be around for a while. I just want them to get everybody's everything on something that plugs in no matter how it's facing.
It only takes one "aw shit" to wipe out a whole bunch of "atta boys".
