Tips & Tricks / Re: Locked PDF - for what it's worth

Quote from: DigitalCrapShoveler on November 12, 2008, 01:29:27 PMTrick I actually learned here... Open the locked PDF in your OS X ColorSync Utility, found in your /apps/utilities folder. Save as out of Colorsync... whallah! No locked PDF, works everytime... so far.
DigitalCrapShoveler is correct (love that screen name by the way), you can use the OS X ColorSync utility to remove a password from a PDF.  One thing I will mention though is I believe they have closed that hole in the Leopard ColorSync utility...I think.

There are a couple of ways this could be done (at least from an Apogee perspective).  One, create a 2nd flow to an Apogee job that would use a 2-up Preps template or two, add a Digital Split For Proof license to my Apogee system.  In my opinion, the latter is the way to go (although more costly than the former) because from a quality perspective, you're not ripping the job twice (once for the main press sheet and one for the proof).  My understanding is that starting with ApogeeX 5, Agfa added a new Digital flavor of Split For Proof that can de-impose ripped data and not just a PDF (which is all one could do in ApogeeX 4) where after the imposition and pages are ripped, DSFP steps in and de-imposes that press sheet into 1 or 2-up printer spreads that can then be output to a postscript output device.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the information!  What I failed to mention (I am getting good at leaving out pertinent details) is that my Apogee system will rip PDF files, de-impose the press sheet into 2-up printer spreads and then send that data to a copier or laser printer.  No additional rip would be needed (short of whatever rip may reside within the copier or laser printer).  The ideal output device (sounds like the Konica model mentioned would be worth looking into) would be able to handle up to 12 x 18 paper (13 x 19 is even better), and can flip the paper automatically to produced two-sided proofs.  Understand that we are only looking to produce a content proof (for pagination, folds, content, etc.).  Pleasing color would be nice but contract color it not a goal for this application.

More responses are still welcome!

Thanks so much!

Is anyone proofing jobs to a color copier or color laser printer? We are looking to try this for proofing certain types of jobs (11x17 folded to 8.5x11 books would be a common example) needing a digital dylux (not contract color). The goal is to reduce cost and produce the proof faster.

If you are doing this, here are some questions:

1. Which make/model of printer/copier are you using?
2. What software or workflow system are you using to send the data to it?
3. How do you handle perfecting jobs on this device?
4. Up to what size of paper does the printer/copier handle?
5. What is the maximum image area of the paper?

Thank you!

Quote from: agent_orange on October 22, 2008, 08:47:47 AMI installed CS4 last Friday and decided, on Monday, to organize my apps folder. I made new folders in Applications called "CS3" and CS4", moved the appropriate apps to each folder and the first time I opened each (to make sure everything was cool) I got the repair warning. I chose repair and I've had no problems since with any of the apps in CS2-4. Maybe they fixed it for 4? Or, maybe it's only been a couple of days and now that I've said "no problem" I'm doomed? My day's probably about to get a lot harder....

You know, it's funny.  I've had mixed luck with that.  I believe the the appropriate permissions have to be in place so that the database file mentioned in the solution can be repaired when the error pops up.  Otherwise, the error pops up again and again.

Quote from: almaink on October 22, 2008, 10:55:20 AMWhy would you want to move them in the first place? They all come complete with their own folders already...

Simple.  We have both CS2 and CS3 on the same machine but we want to keep the CS2 version (soon to be CS3 since CS4 is out) as the default version of the apps to open when double-clicking one their associated files.  As such, I have a separate hard drive partition that contains the CS3 apps and since Adobe won't allow you to install CS3 anywhere but the startup drive.....

Although CS4 is right around the corner, I found a solution to the annoying CS3 error:

Application has moved.  Some settings need repaired.

...only to see that error appear each time you open a CS3 application (assuming you moved the application from its original installed location).

Check out reply #63 by Steve Gedikian here:

All in all, this may not be very useful to most people but for those of you who use CS2 and CS3 on the same machine or if you like to organize your software beyond how it's originally installed, I thought I would share it :-)

We had a job a couple of months ago that had radial blends built with InDesign CS3.  You could see the banding on screen, proof and on press and only with the black.  Strangely enough, we swopped screen angles on the black and magenta and poof, the problem was gone (in all those places).  The job in question was a little bit unusual in terms of colors used.  Although all the process colors were being used, there were no CMYK images in the job (this was sort of a saving grace on this job).

Weird.

Quark Xpress / Re: Guide Removal Script?

Quote from: almaink on January 15, 2008, 08:28:53 AMRemove all guides

To remove all guides from a document, option-click the horizontal and vertical rulers. If the ruler is overlapping the page, then all the page guides will be removed. If the ruler is not touching the actual page, then only the pasteboard guides (guides that appear outside the page) will be removed.

That worked well too.  Thank you!

All sorts of nifty things you can do there.

Ah ok, sweet.  It's funny the things that are right in front of you but you don't see.  I would still be interested in seeing if removing all guides from all pages could be scripted in AppleScript.

Cheers and thank you!

Quark Xpress / Guide Removal Script?
January 15, 2008, 07:55:48 AM
Hi Forum,

I am looking for an AppleScript that will remove all guides from all pages.  So far, all my Googling has turned up one big goose egg.  Anyone have a script that does this or know what the command(s) would be do this (I am not a programmer)?

Many thanks,
Jon :-)
