Title: Create a "stay away" trap in XMF
Post by: iancoulton on July 11, 2017, 07:21:09 AM
Hi,

I hope someone might be able to help me. I have a document which has white-out text (vector) over a black CMYK image (bitmap).

I need to create a "stay away" or "kickback" trap so that the CM and Y separations are pulled away from the edges of the Black separation (obviously to prevent registration issues on press).

I can do this with white-out text over a CMYK rectangle (vector) but I can't get it to work when the white-out text is over a bitmap.

Hope someone can advise - any help is massively appreciated!

Regards,

Ian

I've never seen this work with auto trapping with an image as the background. If I need to do this type of thing (in Prinergy) I have to do it manually by creating a stroke around the text and coloring it C=0 M=0 Y=0 K=100 (or whatever value in the K to match the background of the image as close as possible).

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your reply. That is the same advice I have been given by the manufacturer, I previously used a Screen workflow which had a "kickback" feature in the trapping settings that worked really well.

Cheers,

Ian

Did it work on images as the background? Never seen any of the workflows I've used do it with auto trapping. They would all kickback over tints or vector but not raster images.

Did you look in the Image trapping menu?
There is a selection for 1 bit masks, I think I may have done it before
I will check it out.
the Trap settings are in the "T" icon

Yes! selecting 1 bit masks does trap the white to a 4 color black image
If your black is less than 100% you can change the percentage of the black for trap

Actually I don't have any problem trapping a 4 color image with white vector text
without selecting 1 bit masks no settings needed to be changed
is it a bitmap?

Tracy, is your background image a raster image (photo - not vector or a tint)? And it is knocking the CMY out of the image around the white type?

Yes! I created a 4 color black in photoshop and white text on top in indy

Cool that you have that in XMF. Kodak support says Prinergy can't do it.

Back when I used Agfa Apogee it would create keepaways on images automatically.

Joe - I have Prinergy and it does create keepaways over 4-color black images. Here are my standard settings and it worked when I ran a test (the test image was a 4-color black image [40/30/20/100] placed into ID with white text placed on top in ID.)

Dan - what version of Prinergy are you running? It has been awhile since I asked support about it. Probably version 5 or 6. Right now I am on 7.5 but planning to move to 8.0.2 soon. I'll have to compare my settings to what you show there and give it a try.

7.5

7.5.0 or 7.5.1? I ask because I am on 7.5.0 and using your trap settings it does not spread the CMY back in the image from the white text. Here is my original test PDF and then the trapped one.

7.5.0.668

I looked at your PDF and it isn't working because the black value in the image is 88 or 89%. In the trap settings change Black Color Limit to 87 and it will do it. However, your trap will not be solid black - it will be the 88 or 89 or whatever the value in the image is. In those situations, I like to edit the trap afterwards to be 100% K, but if it's a lot of pages I may just leave well enough alone.

How are you editing the trap? Trap Editor? We don't have that here.

Here is what my trap looks like after refining:

[attachimg=1 width=400]

If I try to do a global change with Pitstop to change that value to 100% K it only changes it to 93% K. Can't make it go any higher. Weird.

Yes, Trap Editor. Bummer if you don't have it.
