Title: What's wrong with this pdf?
Post by: Tracy on August 21, 2018, 02:21:08 PM
Pretty sure this was created in indy, when you try to open this with illy the green box disappears.
which may have been what the label printer did, It's on them but was just curious as to the reason.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5p26aqaub82024a/Test.pdf?dl=0

I can't get it to fail in my workflow

<===== Filling in for Matt Beals while he is dealing with his medical issues.

:whip: BAD TRACY! Illustrator is not a PDF editor! Yes it was created in InDesign:

So if it won't fail in your workflow what is the problem?

Maybe the green box was a "comment"
:hello:

I didn't edit it in illustrator, it was the only way I could replicate the problem the label printer had.
They have to redo it but just wondering why the green box disappears, (It disappeared on the printed labels)
taking the label apart I found it disappears in illy.
When you edit object on the green box it is not there in illy.

They must have dropped it in illy for some reason. not sure tho.

WHEW! I forgive you!

How are they printing it to the label printer?

It's a DeviceN based Blend, I would think Illustrator has trouble interpreting it, so just dumps it.
If you look at it in Outline, the box is still there for the shape, but no fill or stroke.

Thank you! I saw the Device N

We send those out, we don't print labels on rolls, I would imagine it's a flexo?

That's some weird shit.
Try this. I converted it to a Word doc from Acrobat, opened doc in Word and saved as a PDF. Opened that conversion in Illy and it then can be seen and edited. Have no idea why.

Grade 4 glioblastoma, the "widow maker" brain cancer. :) Neuro oncologist says maybe three years. But an old (45th present to myself was killer cancer), stubborn, ornery, mule like me refuses to accept that.

How can I help?

Wow, sorry to hear that Matt.

I heard about that condition because Gord Downey of the tragically hip from Canada had it. Unfortunately he is no longer with us.

Matt, that is right don't accept it. You were in printing. If that hasn't already scared you to death, nothing else will!

You should copy and paste this green box for a big surprise....

Is this green box related to the green sticky note maybe?

pitstop measures the thing at: 13888888888 inches as a square.

That's 219205 miles.

Thats about 9 times around the earth.

WTF

That's understandable. Word has no comprehension of CMYK. NChannel or Device N, so I bet it's RGB after you saved it from Word.
As the original problem in Illustrator was the color space, it can see it now it's RGB.

If you converted the original PDF to RGB with PitStop or Acrobat, I bet Illustrator would work with that as well!

If you save it as PDF X/4 out of Acrobat then it opens fine in Illustrator and the CMYK colour values in the gradient look pretty much the same as the original.

Pssst - Please don't tell Dov Issacs I did this.

You hang on in there Matt. My father in law beat cancer last year. At one point they gave him 24 hours to live. One year on and he's had the all clear. Sadly, he also has Dementia so he can't always remember that he's cancer free. Life is tough.

Tracy,
It prints fine out of Illy for me through CWS. Just as a goof, I selected all using the Print Production tool in Acrobat and right-click edited it (which opens the file in Illustrator. It's the same result as when you open the file directly in Illy. The box is there, but all it's properties are gone; it's just a clear, empty box. I recolored it in Illy and clicked save (which translates it back, and "repairs," the pdf). So there's that.

It prints fine for me too, It was an outside vendor that prolly opened it in illy to print
for some reason. I will be on the lookout next time we print these labels, and try and fix them.
The vendor did reprint them correctly afterwards so I think they know what they did.

Convert with perceptual rending intent. If you use and RGB to CMYK device link you can map RGB primaries to CMYK intelligently and apply GCR from TGLC. I have many profiles already created.

Good to know about the X4 out of Acro, I did X4 it out of indy.
Next time it comes in I will do that first!

X-4 allows for defining an output intent but preserve objects tagged with cmyk, rgb profiles for late binding color conversion. That and optional content groups (layers) allow for great flexibility if you plan the workflow with conscientious forethought.

Don't know how to X4 out of Acro, When I did a save as other Press Ready PDF/X
It seemed to fix the problem, not sure why.

fyi: The file is all vector

You can do it here (which you did):

Or you can do it here via Acrobat Preflight:

Or you can do it with Pitstop Preflight:

Besides color management benefits there is also optional content groups. And best of all, no flattening transparency.
