« on: January 21, 2009, 08:09:46 AM »
Hello!
Maybe you can help me settle an argument before I start it. Maybe you can confuse me some more...
What is the CMYK equivalent of Pantone Orange 021 according to you?

Ahhhh, the trick question. There are many answers to that particular spot mix, and it all depends on when.

Pantone the company, about every few years, as scanning technology improves, redoes their Pantone Libraries. The reason is to produce a "better" more accurate process mix. So, in 1998, the spot mix of PMS 021 CV, would be different from todays PMS 021 C. Then you have the different ink sets for different substrates... C, M, U. So, to answer YOUR question, I need to know... do you want the mix for now, and what is the substrate designation? Or, a few years back when everything was still CV, CVU, CVC, etc...?

How are you man? Been awhile.

Arrr! Indeed it is a trick question...
I'd like to know what Pantone's official breakdown is today. I have a client who's insisting it's one thing when my software says it's another. I think their breakdown is out of date but I want to be sure!
And I'm interested to see what every one else thinks.
I don't have the Pantone colour bridge swatch book, only the C, M and U books and Adobe CS2 software...
And I am well! Thanks! Been very busy, as usual! When I get a moment I'll drop you an email to catch up.
Cheers!

My Color Bridge Coated indicates 68M100Y.

That's what I would use.

Pantone themselves would recommend the absolute newest library. So Indd CS4, with the values 53-M, 100-Y for Coated. If you are arguing with a customer or associate, THIS is the ammo you need. Changing colors with different apps at different times. Frustrating.

Okay, Beck's color bridge book is also valid. Which would back Quark's color current color set. It's up to you... Quark has ALWAYS been on top of the whole Pantone thing... I might steer that way.

Now in practice I use what the App has given me. The whole "When in Rome.." thing.

If I have a PDF with a spot and I'm RIPping to CMYK, I use what Rampage defines it as.

If When I get a PDF or file with multiple spots of the same color, I take a shot of Jack and choose.

I gave up on that debate and, like Stiv just let Preps handle the whole mess when I print to PDF. Customer supplies PDFs and if they spec Ian's Orange on page 63 one way and orange021 on page 64 and they don't match...hey, I'm not a mind reader!

Thanks all! Doesn't look like there is a completely straight answer to this question. Think we'll be going for 68% Magenta.
Cheers!

It won't matter. CMYK isn't going to match the PMS anyway.
