A good alternative to a dell would be a CyberPower PC from Newegg. They're gaming pcs and generally have some pretty good price points for their hardware. They're not as expensive as Dell's gaming line, Alienware.

For comparison:

Hey Thanks! good info!!!!
I was wondering about gaming computers!
Husband may like that, haven't told him, but thinking about giving him the
computer and me just use it for homework.

He plays some Zombie game
7th night or something like that, he plays with his brothers on some server

Yeah an office Dell for your needs with shared graphics isn't going to cut it. Also the Dell you posted specs for uses Windows 10 Home. Make sure you get one with Windows 10 Pro.

I've heard good things about a CyberPower PC. I'm going to assume I just got unlucky with the one that I actually bought. Kept crashing all of the time. Turns out the Video Card that was in it was the problem. CyberPower refused to replace it so I had to buy a different one myself. The internal network card never worked right in it either. Had to buy one of those for it too. I still have that PC but I'll never buy another PC from CyberPower again.

A gaming PC will be a good choice. Prepare yourself for the sticker shock though.

I've heard good things about CyberPower as well. That sucks that yours wasn't a good one though. Pretty crappy of them too to not RMA any of that. I've been pretty lucky with my PC. I haven't had any issues with it but it was a self build.

Tracy that's not a bad idea. I haven't played that game but you should tell them to check out a game called Hunt: Showdown. It's a pretty awesome survival monster bounty hunting game in the swamps of Louisiana in the late 1800's.

Thanks Guys! I will tell hubby about the game
I am not prepared for sticker shock, thanks for the windows pro info, I was wondering about that.

I will be looking on Newegg this weekend, so is installing a better graphics card an option?
do I need to be mindful of the computers ability to handle a better graphics card?

You can always add a graphics card but it has to be one that can use an available slot on the PC you buy. The specs you listed for the Dell on the previous page will work but as AaronH said, it will use system RAM and CPU to display graphics. And it will not be a good gaming system either. Attached is the specs for AutoCad 2018. Notice the minimum and recommended specs I have outlined in red. I outlined in blue the specs if you want the Ultra HD display which would require a separate video card. So for the display you want a minimum display @ 1920 x 1080 (High Definition). The specs you posted will achieve this but not the Ultra HD.

Also I am bugged out by Windows 10 Home....it will work but it might come preloaded with a bunch of stuff on it you don't want.

I have W10 on 4 computers... one is Pro for certain... not sure about the other 3, and no issues. I love it! I did upgrade video cards on my two main computers - the other two are laptops. They are both gigabit motherboards with integrated video, but I stuck Radeons in both with 1.5 GB RAM, and both are driving 2 screens.

You can install a graphics card later as another option but you'll need to keep in mind it will require more power from the power supply and most power supplies on computers without dedicated cards will not supply enough power and will basically cause the computer to shut down. This is fairly easy to get around though with a 500W or more power supply. You'll want a 80 Plus Bronze rated supply or more such as this one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438101&cm_re=evga_500_bq_80%2b_bronze_power_supply-_-17-438-101-_-Product

For a graphics card, your cheapest option would be an AMD RX 560 with 4GB of VRAM and Direct X 12.
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131732&cm_re=amd_rx_560-_-14-131-732-_-Product

That basically adds $50 for the power supply, $115 for the card and tax/shipping if any.

I'll bet we have turned Tracy completely against getting the PC by now.

OK Tracy this is what I found on newegg today which is a little above your $800 price point:

HP Envy 570 Desktop
7th Gen Intel Core i7-7700 Processor
8GB DDR4
1TB HDD
4GB AMD Radeon RX 550 Graphics
DVD-RW
Wifi 802.11-AC
BlueTooth 4.2
USB
HDMI
Windows 10 Pro

HP Envy 570 Desktop Tower, 7th Gen Intel Core i7-7700 Processor,8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, 4GB AMD Radeon RX 550 Graphics,DVD-RW,Wifi-AC,BlueTooth 4.2,USB,HDMI, Windows 10 Pro

This meets all of your requirements other than price and you would also need to buy a monitor. I would buy anything less than a 24" monitor and a minimum resolution of 1920 x 1080 (High Definition).

I could not find a Dell with more the 2 GB of vram in this price range.

It is not the latest and fastest but it should get the job done. If you really need more than this the next logical step would be to up the ram to 16 gb and put an SSD hard drive in it.

I have 2 DVI monitors I'll sell cheap. One is a 21" Dell and the other is a 22" LG. I got the Dell at a swap meet for $2, and the LG I bought new about 8 years ago on Black Friday for $110. You can have both for $50 plus whatever it costs to pack and ship them to San Diego.
