The Rest... / Re: Ubuntu
May 14, 2019, 01:07:06 AM
Which apps are we talking about?

Cause i think ''standard'' (= adobe) apps, are not so easy to install, and from what i was reading needs in cpu/gpu/ram are the same with a pc/mac machine.

Android phones ok ( my needs can't justify the iphone price's anyway ), but till now the only usage for linux i can think of, is installation on a old machine to use it for browsing and basic stuff.

Any one here using linux for serious prepress/creative ( print oriented ) work?

Asking out of curiosity!

Usually the marks are outside the trim box even if the page boxes are wrong so removing the printer marks first usually works. But there are times when there is no trim box. In those cases I do fix the page boxes first and then remove the marks that are then usually outside of the trim marks...

...but not always as some customers put marks in the live work area. Then it becomes a manual process to remove the marks.

That's how i used to work also, back in the printshop.

Marks inside work area are were usually corel pdf's immutable to pitstop actions therefore...

That's why the capitals were for, cause i saw the image, and like i wrote even if i had figure out what to write in the place of the asterix i would be still searching how to make it work inside automator.

That's why i also wrote that with scripting one might do more, there is a lot more documentation and examples all over the net.
( Talking about adobe apps and javascript )

Thanks again it works like it should and i know now how to rename a target folder!

First of all thanks a LOT.

But.

Even if i had figured out what to replace with the * representing the hot folder, i'd still be looking how to ''compose'' the workflow inside automator.

I'll check the prepression blog, but i still think automator needs  a lot of development to be useful.

Thanks Again !

Thanks, that's not what i was really looking for.

Maybe i'm missing something but automator needs a lot of work (= develpment ) to be really useful.

Locking a pdf means you can't open it, no disable editing option available ), few -the least - resources in the web with tutorials or text on how to make your own service and import it to automator etc

I think the best option for automating tasks inside apps or with the finder is scripting, unless you work in a automated workflow like printready or prinergy.

Best - not easy, but with plenty of documentation from adobe.

Thanks again!

Macintosh / applescript to automator workflow...
January 30, 2019, 10:48:42 AM
Like i read below, i'm not the only one having trouble with automator...

So I found this script on the internet, which makes folders out of filenames then moving the files inside them.

--------

for file in *; do
if [[ -f "$file" ]]; then
mkdir "${file%.*}"
mv "$file" "${file%.*}"
fi
done

--------

It works with terminal but first you must ''direct'' it to the proper folder ( writing cd and folder address inside terminal, then pasting the script )

I'd like - and i tried - using this script as a folder action with no success.
( I saved it as .scpt flie inside library/folder action scripts and then enabling folder actions to a folder, without any luck)

Then i tried with automator, as a folder action workflow, same there.

I'd really appreciate if anyone could tell me how should i do this, make a ''hot folder'' with the script above, to which when i throw a file inside, a new folder is created named after the file and then the file is moved inside the new folder.

I could also do with automator tutorials, if anyone has any or could help me find them, even in youtube - but those i saw weren't very helpful!

Thanks in advance!

Macintosh / Re: Automator and acrobat.

Thanks Joe.
Automator's default watermarking action is image based.
The pdfs to be watermarked are of different sizes, so the image option will work on similar sized files, and even then the result is not quite good.

Inside acrobat you can make a text watermark and anchor it to the place you like, so the watermarked/secured pdf's  look  more similar.

Also the default actions are limited, so it would very helpful - if possible - to be able to trigger acrobat actions with automator!

Thanks in advance!

Merry Christmas everybody!

I'm trying to make an app or hot folder with automator so when i drop my pdf there the pdf will be watermarked and encrypted.

I've already made the actions inside acrobat, but i can't find a way to import them or launch them with automator.

Any kind of idea or how to link would be much appreciated!

Esko / Re: Artpro+

I went to a presentation lately and a couple of months ago i tried the packz demo for one month.

If you do packaging/labeling and want to edit pdf's safely you have to choose one of the above.

Both have advantages and disadvantages, both are easier than artpro or package.

The only thoughts i can make is on pricing - for which artpro+ i don't know so i can't compare - and support / feature updates frequency - which i also unfortunately don't know - but that's the two things i'd be interested most if there was a chance to get one.

ok, that's why 5500k lamps are called daylight, but even if you are not working in Michigan you might need dead on balls accuracy late in the afternoon, so you'd better have proper office lighting than waiting for the sun to move straight up over your head!

ps Thanks for the shades - Tracy too -  :)

Typical fluorescent mixed with daylight.

A LOT OF DAYLIGHT.

The longest side of the room has huge windows looking north - north west.

In the afternoon we draw the ''curtains'' down  - not sure how they call those rolls in English -

The lights are warm, but because of the daylight they seem less warm than usual.

Colleagues work on imacs, and i on a hacintosh with a 27inch ultra sharp, factory calibrated...

Funny thing is the majority of jobs are processed very carefully, we keep printed records for reprints etc.

Funnier is that when we have a problem or a doubt we go all over the place to find the right spot to estimate the color look...

Even funnier the thing works, so why argue?

General Prepress / Re: Spot conversion to CMYK
November 26, 2018, 01:01:53 PM
Whenever i caught a spot color in a process - supposed to be - job, i always called the client and asked whether they needed to send files again, or would they let us do the conversion, then i'd let meta do the job.
I remember i had printed a couple of patches with spots converted inside illustrator, inside acrobat and with meta, and heidi's was the most ''accurate''.

For color critical jobs you can't rely on any kind of software, instead of torturing yourself let the client take the responsibility of his - or his mistakes!
